Discover the New World and fulfill your Manifest Destiny!
The New World lies before you with all its peril, promise, and infinite possibility: your colonists anxiously follow you to shore and the treasures of an entire continent await you. But beware of your enemies! Angry natives and rival powers can encroach upon your territory. You'll have to overcome your foes with superior military strategy and wily diplomacy. Only then can you launch your revolution and declare your independence.
Players control either English, French, Dutch, or Spanish colonists in the New World. This New World can be the historically accurate Americas (North and South) or a randomly generated world with varying resources and challenges. Overseeing economic, military, and political growth, you strive to establish independence from the mother country while competing with other colonies for control of the New World.

Nostalgia aside - it's flawless.
Miles better than either of the Civ games, since the setting and small, focused changes elevate the feel of the 4x game.
A timeless classic.
It would be in the top ten of best games ever made, if I had to choose.
I played it when it came out and once in a while ever since. Compared to Civilization and Alphacentauri, this one is my clear favorite. It is better than the newer Colonialization with the Civ 4 engine.
The only bad thing: The larger you get, the more micromanagement there is. And it can be a bid too much before the revolution.
If you're looking for cutting edge graphics you're in the wrong place. But if you're looking for a great simulation of the new world & revolution from a civilization-style perspective then look no further.
This game is significantly better than the modern remake (Civilzation 4: Colonization) and has several features that Civilization did not, perhaps the most important of which is the management of your colonists. Each colonist has some specialty (or no specialty) and works most effectively in that role; managing and acquiring/training those specialists is a key factor in the game and is quite enjoyable.
You can find this for free and play it with dosbox on your own, but if you're not more technically inclined it's definitely worth the price of admission here on GOG.
I recently discovered Colonization, and found it to be a really good game that does not feel aged. Of course the graphics are simple, but they could just as well be from a modern retro-style game.
So I'm a huge fan of Colonization. I played it all the time when I was younger! This definitely scratched an itch that I didn't get when playing Civ II--the level of micromanagement was really appealing. Even with four factions, exploring the map and establishing colonies was the best thing ever!
So why 4 stars? Well...the game I played as a kid wasn't the MS-DOS version, but a later port released for Windows. This meant more accurate graphics, MUCH more legible text, and a menu bar that had things like stats, victory progress, and the Colonizopedia. It was much easier to navigate (having mouse support) and looked better to boot.
Unfortunately, I've had a time and a half trying to find this port, since people are only distributing the DOSBox version. If GOG could release the Windows port, that would be awesome and give Colonization a new level of accessibility to younger gamers.
Still, if you don't mind the older graphics then don't let that stop you from getting this! It just doesn't work for me, though.
