Discover the New World and fulfill your Manifest Destiny!
The New World lies before you with all its peril, promise, and infinite possibility: your colonists anxiously follow you to shore and the treasures of an entire continent await you. But beware of your enemies! Angry natives and rival powers can encroach upon your territory. You'll have to overcome your foes with superior military strategy and wily diplomacy. Only then can you launch your revolution and declare your independence.
Players control either English, French, Dutch, or Spanish colonists in the New World. This New World can be the historically accurate Americas (North and South) or a randomly generated world with varying resources and challenges. Overseeing economic, military, and political growth, you strive to establish independence from the mother country while competing with other colonies for control of the New World.
Plant a foothold in the New World and establish your independence in Sid Meier’s Colonization!
Play either the French, English, Dutch, or Spanish colonial powers, each with distinct characteristics and political situations.
Customize your games and choose your own level of difficulty so you never play the same game twice.

I have played this game for many hours, and every game is a new challenge. The AI is good, the strategy is deep, the progression is rewarding. New gamers, don't let the pixellation discourage you from giving it a try.
I wish they'd make a new version of this game, but I suppose it wouldn't be very PC (except if they'd make it an option for the natives to win - which would be awesome). Anyway, I played this game way back and was addicted to it for more than a year. I'm so happy to see it again. The graphics are very outdated (this was a DOS game), though that kind of makes it even more endearing, but this game is fantastic. Aaaah, good times.
It would be in the top ten of best games ever made, if I had to choose.
I played it when it came out and once in a while ever since. Compared to Civilization and Alphacentauri, this one is my clear favorite. It is better than the newer Colonialization with the Civ 4 engine.
The only bad thing: The larger you get, the more micromanagement there is. And it can be a bid too much before the revolution.
Quite simply, in Colonization your empire-building has a point to it. Your goal is simple: declare independence from the King and win the revolution. No world conquest, no economic victory, no diplomatic victory...it's a very focused mission for a game. I bought the original when it first came out in '94-'95, and I've never really stopped playing it.
This game is hard, just when you think you are winning everything goes to hell. This game is about attention to detail, you need govern just about every facet of the communities that you build and establish trade routes, alliances and conquer the occasional enemy. This game is brilliant.
