Description
You play Sanjuro Makabe, a Mobile Combat Armor (MCA) pilot and Commander in the UCA Security Force. The UCA was originally formed by three dominant megacorporations (Andra Biomechanics, Armacham Technology Corporation, and Shogo Industries). Originally intended as a joint venture that would ensure the continued profitability of the three organizations that founded it, the UCA is now independent, and the dominant military power in existence.

Your mission is to locate and assassinate a rebel leader known only as Gabriel. All of the action takes place either on the planet Cronus or on the spaceship Leviathan. The Leviathan is the flagship of the UCA and is commanded by Admiral Akkaraju. Cronus is the only known source of the biologically active material known as Kato, an incredibly powerful energy source essential to the process by which interstellar travel is possible.

Your deadly enemy is The Fallen, a fanatical terrorist group lead by the mysterious Gabriel, threatens the balance of power on Cronus, and ultimately, control of Kato. You will fight them on your feet or from within one of the different types of Mobile Combat Armor, a giant mech which can run, duck, strafe, swim or transform into an ultrafast hovertank.

You will know the true power of giant robots!
  • Anime-influenced graphics and gameplay design
  • Fight on foot or pilot a giant mech in both open and urban environments
  • An interesting storyline with two possible endings

FPS messiah from the shadows

Let's start by saying, that if this game had come out before half life, it would had been the grand messiah of FPS genre, just as Doom and Half life are seen now. It is hard to understand how many things this game gets right, I won't comment the story yet for I haven't completed the game (feels like your usual mecha-anime stuff). But as for levels, the design is rather good and entertaining. But what I really think hits the spot are the weapons, they kick ass. For they really do feel powerful, usually what it needs to take down a light armored target is two rounds from assault rifle, one if you hit chest or head. Armored targets take few more rounds, but they also go down fast. And also, you are a light target, so watch those corners and doorways, this is no quake. I was very surprised how much fun it was :) The things change when you fight with your MCA (Mobile Combat Armor) most of weapons do some sort of area damage, enemies and yourself take some heavy punishment and fighting takes place in cities or wastelands, you get to choose from 5 different mechs with varying armor and speed characteristics. Take note though, this is no mech "simulation", action is pretty straight forward and works just like you would be infantry.... except you can destroy enemy tanks and MCA's with a giant robot packing lots of firepower from rockets to large laser rifles, and a sword (it's anime, go and figure). It's all fun, I knew this game was rated high back in the day, and I know it got good grades in GoG, but I was still surprised by this title. Sure the graphics haven't aged well, but if you can see under the old graphics engine, there's a very entertaining and solid game underneath :)

One of the best FPS games of all time

Shogo is simply great fun, and manages to combine good old fashioned FPS action -- with the added benefit that it switches between mech and foot-based combat so that you at least appear to get two for the price of one -- with humor and a different kind of plot-line; I can hardly imagine Gordon Freeman having to save a woman's pet cat from the wackos who want to eat it, or trying to decide whether or not to admit to his ex-girlrfiend that he's now dating her sister... though perhaps Half-Life would have kept my attention for longer if he had. Really I can't say much more than that; while the graphics are dated, the AI is old and the anime-based plot is somewhat bizarre, I think I've played through this game more times than any other FPS I own because it never gets boring.

Brilliant!

A game that I can not stop playing over and over again. This is an instant classic and seriously should not be ignored. I remembered playing the demo but never owning the full game. Thanks to GOG, we can now play this timeless game. The game is iconic for its detailed storyline and two way gameplay. Controlling a mech is one, the action packed scenes and bosses never make it repetitive and you find yourself immersed in scenes of busy futuristic cities and landscapes. Along with a large arsenal of varied guns from lasers to explosives. The action doesn't stop, being on foot is the second. Shoot your way through complex offices and streets of varied armies that will not stop until you are gone. Giving you a continous action experience. The game's graphics are brilliant, even to this day. Having the lasers and particles fly right past you give you the sense of futuristic warfare. This game should seriously be considered about being played if you are interested in robots, lasers, anime, classic fps games or to take a trip down memory lane. A game in which I believe has brilliant storyline and gamplay, deserves a 5/5.

Great game with lots of anime influences

This game has a lot of greatness going for it. Funny/enthralling story. Lots of weapons, good graphics for the time (hey it has actual shadows from a time when they didn't do that!), a long single player story, and GIANT KILLER ROBOTS, that you can control and transform and use tractor beams with. That's right, tractor beams. As well as the obvious anime influences, they pay homage to some great shows like Evangelion. Anyone still play online? This game has wicked fun multiplayer!

Cult game from my childhood

Shogo used to be my favourite video game on the PC platform. Weapons are really fun to use, the gameplay is so well-paced you don't have the time to get bored. Through the campaign you get to control a mecha which allows you to smash tiny soldiers into buildings in a feast of much more blood than the human body can hold. Then when you're not, you become the tiny soldier which may have to fight against a giant mecha. I also remember this game having great soundtracks, and also that unforgettable intro sung by a Japanese singer.
