You play Sanjuro Makabe, a Mobile Combat Armor (MCA) pilot and Commander in the UCA Security Force. The UCA was originally formed by three dominant megacorporations (Andra Biomechanics, Armacham Technology Corporation, and Shogo Industries). Originally intended as a joint venture that would ensure the continued profitability of the three organizations that founded it, the UCA is now independent, and the dominant military power in existence.
Your mission is to locate and assassinate a rebel leader known only as Gabriel. All of the action takes place either on the planet Cronus or on the spaceship Leviathan. The Leviathan is the flagship of the UCA and is commanded by Admiral Akkaraju. Cronus is the only known source of the biologically active material known as Kato, an incredibly powerful energy source essential to the process by which interstellar travel is possible.
Your deadly enemy is The Fallen, a fanatical terrorist group lead by the mysterious Gabriel, threatens the balance of power on Cronus, and ultimately, control of Kato. You will fight them on your feet or from within one of the different types of Mobile Combat Armor, a giant mech which can run, duck, strafe, swim or transform into an ultrafast hovertank.
You will know the true power of giant robots!
Anime-influenced graphics and gameplay design
Fight on foot or pilot a giant mech in both open and urban environments
An interesting storyline with two possible endings
Got the graphics and some game mechanics fixed with help from the community, it still ran poor. It wasn't worth fixing, I decided to stop and take my loss.
I think people are giving this game too much credit. Not all old games were great, and I think this might be one of those games that never was and still is pretty mediocre. Not to be a wet blanket, but with all the hard ons that people are having for this quite unspectacular game, I just had to inject some objective criticisms.
Unbalanced weapons, bloated arsenal, unnecessary gameplay features such as the vehicle mode, questionable game mechanics decisions like not being able to holster my gun while in a non-combatant area were a few of the issues that I noticed during my hour or so of play. I could go on about the low poly characters and low res textures, but the dated graphics are forgiveable considering the game's age. However glitches during cutscenes that allowed me to shoot NPCs while having to wait for them to finish their speech before turning and popping a cap in my head, not so forgiveable. Speaking of which the voice acting was surprisingly tolerable in a camp value kind of way.
Perhaps I'm being a little harsh but the whole time I was playing felt like an enthusiastic anime mech fanboy's mod project that never got out of beta testing. Interesting ideas and concept that were unfortunately never fully realized for it to be a successful commercial project.

With rather bad graphics (sorry, but even at the time this game appeared, people that look like demented ragdolls - and I don't mean ragdoll physics - just didn't cut it), bugs and weird things (such as civilians not reacting to your act of vandalism, things not subjected by gravity once you destroy the table they stand on, or hostile civilians not at all concerned by your presence), confusing and way too love interest-filled storyline, boring levels where you hardly do anything interesting, difficulty varying between "dead easy" (in the robot levels, where you can hardly get scratched) and "reloading every ten seconds" (the on-foot levels, where a single human can kill you very quickly), non-notable weapons and enemies, and an overall "rushed" feeling (the ending, oh, the ending!) - SHOGO isn't exactly a shining gem. Even if you're a FPS buff, you'd better skip SHOGO for something better.
