Description
You play Sanjuro Makabe, a Mobile Combat Armor (MCA) pilot and Commander in the UCA Security Force. The UCA was originally formed by three dominant megacorporations (Andra Biomechanics, Armacham Technology Corporation, and Shogo Industries). Originally intended as a joint venture that would ensure the continued profitability of the three organizations that founded it, the UCA is now independent, and the dominant military power in existence.

Your mission is to locate and assassinate a rebel leader known only as Gabriel. All of the action takes place either on the planet Cronus or on the spaceship Leviathan. The Leviathan is the flagship of the UCA and is commanded by Admiral Akkaraju. Cronus is the only known source of the biologically active material known as Kato, an incredibly powerful energy source essential to the process by which interstellar travel is possible.

Your deadly enemy is The Fallen, a fanatical terrorist group lead by the mysterious Gabriel, threatens the balance of power on Cronus, and ultimately, control of Kato. You will fight them on your feet or from within one of the different types of Mobile Combat Armor, a giant mech which can run, duck, strafe, swim or transform into an ultrafast hovertank.

You will know the true power of giant robots!
  • Anime-influenced graphics and gameplay design
  • Fight on foot or pilot a giant mech in both open and urban environments
  • An interesting storyline with two possible endings

Solid

It's been a while since I've played it, so I'll keep things brief. Shogo is a very solid FPS, with really fun and well executed mech combat, and a story with a good sense of humor that will get you through the campaign. It has some difficulty spikes, I found the overall difficulty very manageable but some specific sections were badly designed, and there's some other flaws here and there that keep it from being all it could be. If you feel like sinking your teeth into an old-school style FPS for a weekend or two, and you don't mind the 90's anime vibe (it's not too heavy either), look no further. Bonus points if you like mechs. P.S: There's a secret weapon used to rescue a feline at some point later in the game that has an interesting effect on enemies. Be sure to check it out.

Would be fun, if it worked

Does not work on Windows 10 for me, forums are full of various solutions, but ... it's not playable even with them.

Playing again a little after 20 years

I played the demo and the full game when it first came out in the late 90s. Played it again out of nostalgia on Windows 10 with the help of the Peixoto thing that's mentioned in the forum. The anime aesthetic is alright, but as others have mentioned, there's still bugs/flaws with the game like getting insta-killed if you get stuck in the hinges of a closing (or even open) door. Random FPS drops to like 30 and below. The ammo count only shows you the total, and not how much longer until you need to reload (mainly applies to the non-mech portions). This means you can be firing away at several enemies before you suddenly need to reload, which gets you killed because you're suddenly focused on. Forget about Hard mode, because even on Normal mode you can get gunned down quick because as soon as your foot is visible, an enemy will start firing before you're aware of them. The mechs feel the same as if you're on foot, there's no sense of piloting a huge mech other than stepping on human soldiers and them not doing as much damage to you. In the human missions, I mainly used the machine pistol and assault rifle and strafed to avoid damage. I think when you're first able to choose a mech, the differences between them are explained (like armor/speed/HP) but I didn't notice a difference. Overall this is fun for nostalgia and provides about a day's worth of fun through the story (all paths included). Just be aware of dated game mechanics (running into a door/button to activate it etc).

The sadistic game for masochist FPS vets

Made by compotent but sadistic devs with passion, and the result Is an unbalanced, unpolished and yet a well made and satisfying rough gem that will leave you with battle scars to smile upon. How unbalanced Is It? The weapons are as devistating to you as they are to them and you will quick-save a lot because you will quick-die a lot, and quick-load a lot. Tedious as that sounds, It's quite rewarding. This Is a mecha-game so how does It handle? Like a standard FPS except the realy diffirence between mecha and on-foot Is mostly In the weapons used, and how fragile you are to getting shot but explosives remain deadly no matter how big you are. While I am rating this five stars, I'm not going to Ignore the major problems of this game. The AI while stupid enough to blow themselves up with explosives are quite deadly with their reaction times even on normal, an example being would be running around a corner Into a shotgunner and being quick-dead If you don't quick-shoot the moment you see their arm. But If you open a door that slides upwards, here's a very useful hint: back away Immediately because If someone Is behind It, they'll see you before you see them. But don't let that discourage you, as you don't need much persistance or patience because after a few stages It's just a few seconds wasted. As for the story It doesn't get In the way and the dialogue Is good cheesy dubbed 90s anime fun and the story Isn't bad either. It has nice twists and Sanjuro Is likable just for his appropirate attitude towards everything. So If you enjoy getting beat by a game only to beat It back harder for the weekend, this Is for you.
