Shadow Warrior tells the offbeat tale of Zilla Enterprise’s corporate shogun Lo Wang as he is ordered to acquire a legendary blade of limitless power by his deceitful employer. Now the reluctant hero must become legend through a masterful combination of gun, blade, magic and wit to uncover the truth behind the demonic invasion and banish evil back into the darkness.

I was sceptic about this game, saw few movies and screenshots, but actually comments here made me buy it. And i do not regret, game is classic shooter along with melee mechanics. Pretty complex, secrets to find and not even bad story. It's sure worth 9,99$ from promotion now. This game makes you use more melee weapons than guns only because melee fight is more awesome here than shooting. Greatly done game.
Smooth, fluid, colorful and violent - with a good story, too. Some shortcomings in weapon and enemy variety can be overlooked, because otherwise Shadow Warrior is everything an fps should be.
Total size on my hard-drive: 14 GB
+ Mobility is excellent. Movement is quick and smooth.
+ Great story.
+ Graphics are fantastic, especially for a game from 2013.
+ Great optimization.
+ Katana gameplay is violent and gory.
+ Fantastic soundtrack.
+ Excellent level design.
+ Good use of environmental hazards (exploding barrels, cars etc.).
+ New Game+ mode.
+/- Guns are meh. They get the job done, but that’s all.
+/- Default key-bindings are odd. Any key combo that require a double-tap PLUS a tap of another key is an instant point off for me. Keys are rebindable, though, and there is full controller support.
+/- The humor is straight-up 80’s action-style cheesy humor. And there are way too many Wang jokes. It didn’t wear on me, but could be annoying to some because it’s present right up to the end.
- Enemy variety. It’s not good. And the beserker is easily one of the most annoying enemy types I’ve EVER encountered (the old “only weak spot is on their back” schtick, except getting the beserker to turn can be tricky).
- Lack of bosses. There are a few, sure, but the majority of the game is horde mode. A more difficult encounter usually means an increased amount of enemies.
- Level design might be good, but it’s easy to get confused about which way to go. Sometimes you’ll find yourself going backwards through a level because the door you entered looks just like the one you’re supposed to use as an exit.
- Lack of direction through a level also means it’s easy to mistakenly advance to the next part or even exit the level when all you wanted to do was look around for secrets.
The fluid gameplay and funny dialogue is hard to resist, though, making Shadow Warrior an easy recommendation for fps fans. A reminder of just how memorable good games can be. 9/10
Decent graphics despite age, good sound and music, beautiful level design and variety of weapons from ranged to melee using katana. Game also has bunch of fun and hilarious references to various things, humor is often pretty dark and I really like the upgrading which gives game somewhat RPG-ish feel, but what really absolutely killed the fun for me was the grind. Like 1/3 into the game when big enemies roll in, combat just becomes such absolute dreadful and annoying grind just because enemies become such horrible bullet and sword cut sponges the game doesn't even become hard as it becomes annoying as hell as you're just running in circles, charging most powerful katana charge and jabbing them in the face for half an hour, every combat encounter. Or plant nukes at their face. And it doesn't change later when you upgrade yourself all out on damage. Which means every fighting segment you get into is a dragging like a crippled snail and just becomes so annoying I'm basically playing the game just to finish it and be over with it. It's a shame because the game looked promising and exciting in the beginning and then just lost all the appeal because of annoying design and gameplay decisions, primarily around combat. And while they at least tried to make melee combat fresh and something different, double tapping directional keys like a lunatic gets really super annoying. Especially when Sprint key is getting stuck and you want to charge up a KI power just to prepare a regular katana attack instead. Or not heal because game thinks you're still holding Sprint key. This wasn't happening in the beginning of the game and it's making everything double annoying.
It's a shame they ruined what looked like an excellent game on silly technicalities.
This is a re-imagination of the original game, and I enjoyed the original a lot back in 1998, so I had a slight knot in my stomach as I saw this release - knowing that the other 3D Realms icon Dule Nukem - was a kind of a flop.
A disappointment, at least to me, since it was very consolified, relied only on checkpoints, did only allow 2 weapons at a time (later expanded to 4 weapons, but still) and was somewhat uneven in gameplay and storytelling.
Shadow Warrior of 2013 is something else entirely - Lo Wang is back baby and he is here with the gameplay, the flare and the hardcore violence and humor found in the 90s 3D Realms games.
It is delight to play and if you've played Shadow Warrior of 1998 or Duke Nukem 3D of 1996, then you know what you can expect of this incarnation. It is a sibling - a familiar face - but graphically updated and with gameplay enhancements like advanced swordplay and weapon upgrades.
This is worth your money. Stop reading already! Buy, download and play. This is what Duke Nukem Forever should have been.
