Description
Shadow Warrior tells the offbeat tale of Zilla Enterprise’s corporate shogun Lo Wang as he is ordered to acquire a legendary blade of limitless power by his deceitful employer. Lots of fun

For a shiny graphics FPS it's surprisingly good! The key selling points are graphics, combat system, humour and easter eggs. All of those work really well together, it's a good package. The map design is a bit simple now and then but it's not bad. Gore is so completely over the top that it's just hilarious combined with the dialogues and phrases. There's lots of stuff to find and to unlock. Beating up the biggest demonic Yakuza boss of all time with a giant dildo? No problem! Many (if not all) maps have a hidden section with a seamless transition to Shadow Warrior 1 graphics and there is much else to find. I will definitely play the other game modes as well, the combat system is indeed making melee fun again although the mix of ranged weapons is really good too. The quality of the graphics was great and I didn't know how advanced OpenGL actually is today. Seeing how perfect this port of a Havok engine game is working I wonder if we'll see Fallout 3 and Oblivion natively and DRM free on Linux some day, this would be quite awesome.

Fun overall, but one pretty big issue.

The story was worth following. The action was enjoyable. The quips and eggs were some what hit or miss, given a bit lacking about 1/2 way in to the game. Combat over all was engaging, the main the really only issue I had was the game was more so an arena shooter. At the start you do not really notice it as you try and kill all demons to survive, but as some areas or control panels don't unlock it takes you out of the experience. That is where the minus one star comes in, if I did not have mastered the sword attack skills, early on in the game, there would have been a few areas I would have had to restart due to enemy placement. If it wasn't for the fact the 3 sword ability and my choosing it early on this game would be getting 3 stars. I recomend the Shadow Warrior over all, If you like the genre. Just be ware in some areas if you do not have the right set up you might have to restart due to enemy AI and the lack of ability to get to them if you dont have the right loadout.

Fun sword combat, weak guns and levels.

Probably worth trying just for the sword combat. Guns are pretty bad, though. The shotgun in particular is a travesty. It looks and feels terrible in its own right, but it's downright embarrassing compared to the iconic riot gun of the first game. Levels are mostly just linear series of arena fights. Between the monotonous level design and relying almost exclusively on the sword for combat, the game gets really tedious after a while. The sword combat was engaging enough for me to finish the game, but the latter third of the game was a real slog. Lo Wang's banter isn't bad, but I wish they'd hammed it up more. It's pretty dry, and the game starts to take itself way too seriously toward the end. I like the genuine camaraderie that develops between Lo Wang and Hoji, but there gets to be a real lack of humor to balance out the melodrama. As a followup to the original, it's pretty superficial. On its own merits, it's okay. Grab it on sale and slice shit up.

Surprisingly good

While I loved Duke Nukem back in the days, I think I never played more than the demo of the original Shadow Warrior and I wasn't really impressed as far as I recall. Still, I enjoyed the remake much more than I expected. And not because it's a very modern game but because it's old school in a good way. I still recall how much I loved Duke Nukem for allowing you to interact with the world. And this is exactly what makes Shadow Warrior fun. About everything here can be destroyed either to damage your enemies or to search for secrets or just for fun. Yeah, it's strictly level based, heavily scripted and the enemies are dumb, but slicing through them with your Katana is just a lot of fun. There are a lot of different locations, the right amount of hidden secrets and the graphics look quite good for a game that is not the AAA title of a big studio.
