I really enjoyed this one. The Commandos games are among my all time favorite, and I love the stealth strategy mechanics. And this one definitely delivered for me. Lovely set of characters, each with its own style and skills. What I really liked is that despite how different they all were, none of them felt overpowerted or underpowered. The balance was perfect, in the entire game I did not encounter any situation that was feeling impossible to solve, regardless of the crew mates I had for the mission. I enjoyed switching the pirates and trying new tactics and approaches. One small negative side is that you repeat a lot of the mission locations/islands. for the most part it's just a different section of the island, so the variety remains, but you go through some of the same areas as well. That being said, with me constantly rotating the crew, I had to use different approaches even if replaying a section that I have already visited, so it was still fun. The overall story was rather simple, but I enjoyed the vibe of the world the developers created. Quite long as well - which can be good or bad, depending on what type of gamer you are. All in all, fun time.
I loved Shadow Tactics and Desperados 3, and Shadow Gambit left me super satisfied too.
While I feel the story suffers a little by allowing the player to choose which characters to take on each mission (reduces unique and fun banter relevant to the mission, as seen in previous games), the premise of a bunch of cursed pirates searching for the former captain's lost treasure kept me interested from start to finish.
The gameplay loop of stealthily killing and hiding enemies is pretty similar to Mimimi's previous games, but the combinations of characters to use offers tons of replay value and makes each mission feel fresh. Nobody is overpowered or overly weak, and I appreciate how balanced the characters are. The DLC characters were super fun and had very unique abilities too.
Allowing the player to customize how they approach each mission with different character loadouts and landing spots might've been for the better or worse. I really can't decide. The only conclusion I could make was how much I enjoyed each mission and how I never became bored.
I don't know what this "sweet baby inc" controversy is all about, and i don't really care. I found all the characters very interesting and enjoyed the compelling main story too. I might've had an axe to grind if I found the writing and dialogue boring, but that didn't happen. It also doesn't hurt that the voice acting in Shadow Gambit is really impressive.
This was a very long game and there's much more to do after completing the main story. It took me 40 hours to finish the campaign, and there's still plenty more completionist activities left for me to do. You definitely get your money's worth with Shadow Gambit.
I encourage anybody who enjoys challenging real-time tactics games to try Shadow Gambit! Also check out the DLCs, because I had a lot of fun with them.
Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew is excellent in every possible aspect of the game as are Shadow Tactics: Blade of the Shogun, Desperados III and Shadow Tactics: Blade of the Shogun - Aiko's Choice all coming from the same amazing game studio called Mimimi.
I've been a long time Commandos and Desperados hardcore fan and this game is everything I expect it to be an even more than that regarding RTT or now called stealth strategy genre.
I recommend buying it with all of my heart as you won't regret it!
No
No thanks to this. Shadow Tactics and Desperados III are very good games.
If you want games that are as good as Shadow Tactics or Desperados, with proper difficulty and strategy, 'War Mongrels' and '63 Days' are essentially the same though a little harder than MIMIMI games and maybe a bit longer....but have great levels and moments, though I advise to start with War Mongrels, as if you liked Desperados, you'll definately love these levels and tasks.
This game has a much more gamified approach and world design, and essentially ruined the type of the game that it is and what came before to appeal to an non-existing audience, (hence bye-bye MIMIMI)
The changing of a linear well paced game with very well designed levels and characters + character skill sets were changed to a more 'open world' approach that is mediocre at best in all areas of design with nonsense story and gamey additions that are designed to waste your time for 'play time' stats. In an attempt to see you choose your own characters per mission and revisit the same maps ruins what could have been a great game, with the original characters they intended.
P.S, War Mongrels and 63 days are the spiritual successors to MIMIMI Shadow Tactics and Desperados III. And they do it better, (in my opinion).
