One of the greatest console-style RPGs ever created.

That's right. Console style. See it up there? Well, it's true. This game may be for PC, but it feels like a console game. Now, that's not a bad thing at all. Not even remotely. There's only one game that compares to this; as some other reviewers have said, it's very reminiscent of Chrono Trigger. More on that in a bit. First, a breakdown! Sound Quality: 5 stars. Firstly, the game is voice acted. Completely. All of it. Even the average generic mooks talk. How cool is that? Most modern games can't even pull that off. And it's very well done, too. As is the music, with tracks that really match the feel of each zone. Graphical Quality: 5 stars, again. I'm a sucker for the style of graphics this game uses, but on top of that, they are very beautiful just by default. Look at the detail on the characters, the designs, the.. everything. It's lovely. A lot of care went into making the game beautiful. Gameplay Quality: Once again, five stars. The controls are very easy to grasp, but there's a lot of depth to things. Both in communication and combat. For the former? Not only can you talk to just about everyone in the game and ask about various things, but each party member tends to have their own input on things. Well, except Runner. We'll get to him in a bit. As for combat? It feels half-chrono trigger, half-Xenosaga 1, half-idon'tknowwhatelse. Just trust me, it's friggin' sweet. Character Design: This may be the game's finest point. Everyone is fully fleshed out. Everyone has a role, a purpose, a.. everything. And best of all, THEY AREN'T STEREOTYPES! Your first character is the one you see on the cover. Maya. That's not a magic gun she's holding folks; she's an intelligent, skillful user of the assault rifle, and all it's various mods. The second? I won't reveal names, but he's this weedy little guy who likes robots. He looks like a punk that'd shank you in a heartbeat. He's the most powerful mage the world has ever seen. And the third? Runner. A freaking robot dog that barks lasers. Do you read me? A ROBOT DOG THAT BARKS LASERS! So, all in all? THE GAME HAS A ROBOT DOG THAT BARKS LASERS! Why have you not bought it yet? Quit reading and click buy!

Unplayable on modern PC's

The game basically just doesn't run unless you follow a bunch of guides from a decade ago and pray one works. I loved this game back when it was my first PC game I ever owned. It's a shame.

Not quite what I expected

I had heard people talking a bit about this game at release, and I have somewhat fond memories of looking at the box and seeing the potential. After purchasing the game on GoG, I was a bit disappointed. I love the environment, and the story is interesting enough, but combat, which you spend 90% of the time doing, is a big fail. The best strategy seems to be to just wait until everyone has their strongest attack and then unleash, only using the small bars for healing. Worse, I haven't found magic to be useful AT ALL. And then there are the attacks that are supposed to hit multiple enemies in a line. Nice idea in theory. Unfortunately, most of the time the enemies are lined up in such a way that you can only ever hit one of them. I kind of like what they were trying for, but it's getting hard to force myself through the second half of the game - I feel like I've already seen all that the game has to offer. 2 1/2 stars, rounded down

Memories

Oh wow .. Septerra Core. Played this game so many years ago. It was a chance find. I didn't know anything about the game and bought it on a whim but it turned out to be one of the most memorable games I have ever played. The reason for this is simply the wonderful characters the game packs. They are memorable, their stories somehwat poignant and you grow fond of them. On the other hand, the game itself can get very annoying at times due to the respawning of enemies in a room you had just cleared to get to another room to get a keycard etc. It wouldn't be too bad if the fighting was real time but due to the unique fighting mechanics it starts to feel like unnecessary waste of time. Don't get me wrong the figthing mechanics is fun to play with. It's highly original and makes you use tactics but after fighting the same group of enemies three times the uniqueness fades out fast. All in all, though, I highly recommend this game siply due to the wonderful story and the great characters.

Good for what was put into it.

Well a lot of people do not relise that this game was independent, so when you compare it to FF8 and Ultima 9, you have to understand that two years before releasing this game, they lost their company, and the rights to their own game. So this is not a blockbuster budget game, so do not walk into it thinking that it is going to be a quality title for 1999. This game is fun and has very well done music and voice acting ( Thats right!!! NO READING!!! I can't say how many times I have been put off by videogames that force you to read. There is still text so if you are def you can still enjoy this title ) The graphics are not currently the best, but on my computer that reslution is 2560x1440 they do not look terrible. The controls seem very odd at first, and sometimes when slecting from map screens it can be hard to figure out what you should click on. This game is great, plays well, and should be enjoyed!!!
