Sea Dogs

It has been some time since I played that game, but I remember how hyped I was to give it a try. It was a disappointment, unfortunately. This is one of these games that had great potential, but just didn't have everything done right. But there was one thing that ruined it forever for me - The Controls. These bloody controls. Quoting the AVGN 'The controls are like something You do for a cheat code, not a basic move that You have to do, in order to play the game.' And this is of cource the hardest thing to explain, because unless You have played the game, You will not understand. But play 'Sea Dogs' for a while, then turn on 'Sid Meier's Pirates!' from 2004, and You will get a picture.

The maximum resolution (horizontal) is about 1124. This causes the game to go full screen as a matchbox window. It will run in windowed mode, but does behave quite strangely (on Win 11 at least). It randomly crashes, and is a little bit too much hassle to even get to play comfortably to find out the attraction that others see.

Good points first. It's a great sailing management sim, and the fact you can change your allegiance is an excellent bonus. The plot is a bit loose, and what little I got to experience of it wasn't very engaging. But the aim of this game is to be a captain of a grand ship, so there you go. I couldn't stick with it for long though. The controls are janky and the mechanics of the game totally go against what I'm used to in my style of play. I really want to like this game more but in the end it was just causing me stress. I've uninstalled and will try again another time, I think. I'm so disappointed that I lost patience with it. It does seem like a fun cult classic and I can see its appeal. I'm trying to take down Ropeflank or whatever his name is. During my attempts to take him down, his ship spawn location seems to be random. It either sails off into the distance where I can't catch up, or it holds still long enough for me to shoot it - but when I board, I'm getting one-shot by the pirate captain it just takes all the fun away. If I can take down his ship and board it with relative ease, then why can I not then beat the captain one-to-one? It just doesn't make sense.

Despite showing its age by certain aspects (cities designs etc) the gameplay is an incredibly solid base covering all basis that every "pirating / naval" game should definitely look up to

Major graphics glitches on my windows 8 laptop and doesn't even run on windows 7 desktop. Both meet the requirements listed for the game and neither use intel graphics cards. In the process of trying various workarounds to get this running at all...
