Sea Dogs

Still a great game. Runs fine on laptop with intel hd520 graphics (but compass became black from time to time). Gog definitely need to integrate original fonts (found on gog forum https://www.dropbox.com/s/87ej43x2vu1iunl/fonts.tar.gz?dl=0)

This is the best game when it comes to both sailing and sea combat. Somebody said you cannot tell how well you are doing during battle. Wrong!. You are given this information simply by observing an opponent with your spyglass. A better spyglass will also tell you what cannon load the other ship is using and the combat skills of the captain. You can also see masts falling and sails shredding as the battle progresses. I have played numerous sailing combat games, and none of them come close. I always find myself coming back to Sea Dogs to get some realistic action. I have "finished the game at least 5 times. This gane has been on several HDs over the years and is still installed after about 15 years. I have made several copies so I will never be without it. I bought Sea Dogs for way less than Skyrim, but Skyrim was deleted well before finishing. I would not pay a penny to get Skyrim back, but I would pay $50 for Sea Dogs if I somehow lost all my copies and my HD at the same time.

Sea Dogs were the first pirate game I remember playing, I loved it when it came out however truth must be told that it does not run well on modern systems, you can get the resolution 1920x1080 easily enough by editing an ini file, however the map screen appears entirely broken

A really nice game in many ways. A bit punishing (it doesn't give you all the info you need about controls for example - the amount of time it took me to find out about the speed-up button for sailing... Consulting a walkthrough is recommended) and the graphics are sometimes comically bad, but it is challenging, fun and has decent variety of plot and gameplay for an older game. Sadly, this version is too bugged for me to keep playing. The game freezes at times when I enter buildings, for which the only solution is to close down the game, and when I start it again it has deleted my latest save file.

Up to this game we had nothing but Sid Meiers Windows 3.1 version of his game that gave you any semblance of buccaneering on a Micro scale. Then along came Sea dogs with its amazing for the time Graphics and missions and all kind of good stuff. Though it gets repetitive it did recharge the genre succeeded by Sea Dogs 2 that was hijacked by Disney and renamed of course Pirates of the Caribbean, but we knew what it was. It time time until we arrived at Assassins creed 3 to up the ante on the genre. I will always have found memories of Sea dogs but the repititve gameplay and same looking locations and occasional bugs make this one for the memory chest and only those who haven't played it should certainly give it a try.
