Description

Scorn is an atmospheric first-person horror adventure game set in a nightmarish universe of odd forms and somber tapestry.

It is designed around the idea of "being thrown into the world". Isolated and lost inside this dream-like world, you will explore different interconnected regions in a non-linear fashion. The unsettling environment is a character itself.

Every location contains its own theme (story), puzzles and characters that are integral in creating a cohesive world. Throughout the game you will open up new areas, acquire different skill sets, weapons, various items and try to comprehend the sights presented to you.

GAMEPLAY FEATURES

COHESIVE "LIVED-IN" WORLD
Scorn takes place in an open-ended world with different interconnected regions. Each region is a maze-like structure with various rooms and paths to discover. All the storytelling happens in-game, with no cut-scenes to distract you from the grisly reality of the living, breathing world you’re in. But keep your eyes open - the game won’t show you any sympathy if you miss something important on your uneasy travels.

FULL BODY AWARENESS
Players will experience better immersion being aware of the character’s body and movement. Interaction with the world is realistic - objects are picked up with your hands (instead of just floating in midair), machines and instruments are operated by grabbing the controls, etc.

INVENTORY AND AMMO MANAGEMENT
Your loadout is defined and limited. This plays a big role in keeping the player in an even greater state of awareness throughout the whole game. Players will have to think about when to fight and when to take cover and how their actions affect the world around them. Different play styles will be needed to advance.

Come for the horror, not the action.

What Scorn sets out to do, it does fantastically. You are dropped in an alien world with nothing but that world to show you what is going on and what to do about it. And yet with such an obscure start it manages to tell a story about the world itself as if you are excavating it, keeping most of it's puzzles embedded within that world building as you struggle to survive a realm that left you and the civilization your character lives in behind long ago. It's alien, horrific, grotesque, and tense as hell. It's not perfect by any means, but if this sounds like your cup of tea, you will love this. However, if you only came here because you saw the rapid kill-shots of the later trailers, I'm afraid you've been deceived. This is not an action game.

Yo dawg, heard you like H.R. Giger!

Best part is when John Scorn kicks open the vaginal trailer door with dual lightsaber-shooting AK-47's and yells "It's Scornin' time!" But seriously, this is a different kind of game. More of an experience. Every frame of this game is like an H.R.Giger painting, and that's an incredible achievement. Surprisingly, except for a few Engine stutters, it runs like a dream on my aging RX580. You will feel in awe and increasingly disgusted as you progress. There's an interesting choice you can make in Act 1 that I wish happened more throughout the game. Just...another solution for a puzzle. One negative is the "lights" puzzles. They are an order of magnitude higher in difficulty than any other thing. I highly recommend using a walkthrough for just that part, I could discern no easy way to figure them out. Some complain about the combat, and it is indeed pretty clunky/slow, but I feel it's appropriate for the game. I mean, just look down at your body in the game and you can see you are all sorts of (increasingly) f'd up. Could also use a basic photo mode to tweak all the gorgeous screencaps too.

Good, but also felt lacking

I really liked the world and atmosphere of this game. A wierd world to explore. Is this hell, another dimension, another planet, who knows, and who or what are your character? It makes me want more of this. I want to know more about the world and the character. Wich is a good thing. But, at the same time, the game feels a bit lacking when it comes to choices. Overall, buy the game if you want an interesting hellish world to explorer.

Great visuals, poor combat

This isn't a game; it's art. The H.R.Giger-esque visuals are spot on, as is the audio and music. It's clearly a work of skill (and love). As far as the walking sim parts go, it's brilliant, to the point of wishing it had a VR option. If this was the entire game, it would be perfect. However, after a while, Scorn (unfortunately) starts throwing enemies at you, and the mechanics are not ready for it. At all. - The walking speed is very slow. You are not agile enough for combat. - The game explains nothing. You pick up a tentacle creature, and have to read a walkthrough to find out, it's a health pack that you apply by pressing . Some exposure, or even a short text message, would have gone a long way. - Your only weapon (at first) is a melee combat "gun", with no indication if you are in striking range. - At the same time, the first enemies are able to attack from a distance--and they do a lot of damage. - Little feedback, how much (if any) damage you are doing. - Ergo, you will die, a lot. - No manual saves, and the automatic save points are frustratingly far apart. If you die, be ready to be set back 5-10 minutes. - Walking speed is very slow. While you can press to "run" (which isn't mentioned anywhere), the difference is barely noticeable, and backtracking is a constant, so dying is unnecessarily punishing. Long story short, it's a visually stunning game that is plagued by frustrating combat mechanics.
