Description
Scorn is an atmospheric first-person horror adventure game set in a nightmarish universe of odd forms and somber tapestry.

It is designed around the idea of "being thrown into the world". Isolated and lost inside this dream-like world, you will explore different interconnected regions in a non-linear fashion. The unsettling environment is a character itself.

Every location contains its own theme (story), puzzles and characters that are integral in creating a cohesive world. Throughout the game you will open up new areas, acquire different skill sets, weapons, various items and try to comprehend the sights presented to you.

GAMEPLAY FEATURES

COHESIVE "LIVED-IN" WORLD
Scorn takes place in an open-ended world with different interconnected regions. Each region is a maze-like structure with various rooms and paths to discover. All the storytelling happens in-game, with no cut-scenes to distract you from the grisly reality of the living, breathing world you’re in. But keep your eyes open - the game won’t show you any sympathy if you miss something important on your uneasy travels.

FULL BODY AWARENESS
Players will experience better immersion being aware of the character’s body and movement. Interaction with the world is realistic - objects are picked up with your hands (instead of just floating in midair), machines and instruments are operated by grabbing the controls, etc.

INVENTORY AND AMMO MANAGEMENT
Your loadout is defined and limited. This plays a big role in keeping the player in an even greater state of awareness throughout the whole game. Players will have to think about when to fight and when to take cover and how their actions affect the world around them. Different play styles will be needed to advance.

Atmospheric but unsatisfyingly short

Pros____ - Art: As many have already pointed out the art direction is beautiful, haunting and detailed - Sound: The sound design and music was perfectly gross, atmospheric and unnerving - World: The world is intriguing and the enviromental story telling is fascinating. It really makes you crave more. - Exploration was encouraged but concise: I always felt like I could walk around and explore the area but I never felt like I was wandering for too long before figuring out what I needed to do Cons_____ - Combat is relatively simplistic: While the weapons look cool you rarely need to use them and when you do it's not that fun - It's very short: I hit 100% in 4 hours. Now, that isn't necessarily a bad thing, some games outstay their welcome at 4 hours. But I think the world and whatever cryptic narrative they set up unfortunately suffers because of this. - Few areas/zones to explore: You mainly stay in one aesthetic area for most of the game, you do briefly see a couple of areas that look slightly different but you don't get long enough in them. - Stutters and performance drops: This may be patched out as time goes on but I regularly got fram drops when wntering new areas and stuttering as I was moving my camera around

H.R. Giger legacy? Let's review!

From an artistic point of view, it's what H.R Giger wanted us to see. I'll give it a strong 9 out of 10 for that. Sadly the gameplay and the fact that it was stuck in development hell for years ruined it. Clunky gameplay with very poor game design, puzzles... I'll stop there so that I don't ruin it. Just play the game if you love H.R. Giger art and unique feeling. Don't expect too much from a gaming point of view, you'll be disappointed. Gameplay 3/10 H.R Giger immersion 9/10

Needs refinement

I wanted to love this game so much I' first heard of it in 2016 and I have waited with great anticipation since then. Scorn LOOKS INCREDIBLE. The atmosphere is AMAZING. Sadly the gameplay doesn't hold up for me; I like puzzles but I don't LOVE puzzles. I feel like new games handhold you too much but this one hand holds not what so ever. Conceptually this is an absolutely unreal and fantastic product, but in practise I find the puzzles to be confusing, frustrating and the combat that is here is underwhelming. I played for 45 minutes and was irritated by the lack of progress . I get lost easily in games and not having a map is incredibly frustrating for me. I really want to like this game but sadly its just not for me, I really hope you like it though if you play it!

Good art, bad game

Smash Bros. Melee was made in 13 months, Fallout NV in 36, This game has more than both and somehow less gameplay, less point, and less reason to play it. The art is undeniably stellar, one of the most visually detailed and interesting games of the year by a long shot. The problem, is that art direction alone cannot save a game with mediocre combat, no coherent narrative, and multiple puzzles where the answer is entirely abstract. Alien horror and the world being entirely beyond our understanding is one thing, wasting time fiddling with a bunch of buttons to find out what they do and what possible way you can actually get progress from them only to wander off to the next one because there is no clear sense of progression is another.

If Giger designed Myst for Frictional

It's probably not fair for me to review the game when I'm only an hour in, but I wanted to give potential buyers an idea of what they're getting for $30. I had no preconceived notions whatsoever going in. I simply did what any good sucker--er, consumer--does once in a while and bought it on a whim. So: What Scorn reminds me of more than anything, and it reminds me of them very strongly, are the later Myst games--Myst IV in particular (I never played V). Unlike those games, it does not restrict you to slideshow movement--it is full 3D, like Obduction--but the main goal and gameplay are exactly the same: try to understand out what's going on, figure out how the contraptions work and what they do, and enjoy the atmosphere. Or be unsettled by it, as the case may be. That is clearly what the designers were shooting for, and since I'm not far enough in yet to give a fair assessment, I'll hold off on whether they've fully achieved it or not. It definitely doesn't suck, though. A lot of care has been put into the graphical design, which is pretty much Alien vs. Soma. What at least the first section seems intended to evoke ("evoke," not slavishly recreate) is what it might have felt like to personally explore the alien derelict in the first Alien movie alone. The Giger aesthetic looms large and is too obvious to bear mentioning, but I just mentioned it anyway in case you haven't been hit over the head with it enough yet. I'll leave it at that. I think I've pretty accurately described what you may expect for your money without spoiling too much. I've heard tell the game is fairly short, so that's something to consider as well, although I can't give you any more guidance than that. I'm giving Scorn four stars for now, since I liked the Myst games and I'm enjoying the vibe, but that, of course, could change later. Like I said, I'm just trying to give potential buyers an idea of what they're looking at when considering buying this game.
