Poor functionality
It seems the game either has a problem with Windows 7 or 64bit, as the internal calculations regarding earnings and stats kept showing quite different numbers. This was not a major problem though, as the game did function perfectly. The main point that got me to put the game down after playing for a hour, is the fact there is no real sandbox game option. The choice they gave was still parks with the roads and layout pre-built...

Rollercoaster Tycoon 1.2
It's kind of a small software update that adds a scenario editor and expansion pack with some more rides that does not justify a new release. As the price difference here on GOG is not so big it's not that much of a rip-off nowadays, but don't buy 1 & 2 together as they are mostly identical. I did not like the new scenarios too much. There is more crappy looking decorations. The engine is quite limited here in adding houses and you see that Chris Sawyer had maybe one designer so the props are repeated too often. In fact I immediately downloaded http://www.ginever.net/files/file/4-rollercoaster-tycoon-2-community-content-pack/ which has the RCT 1 scenarios converted to RCT 2 which look a lot more decent. Still it's the addicting and fun Rollercoaster Tycoon gameplay. The isometric perspective is great for building a rollercoaster because the current squares are highlighted and you always know where you are. I also like the intuitive construction interface that some game magazines complained about. A true classic.

RCT1, RCT2 and OpenRCT!
The must-have childhood game! Remember to go to https://openrct2.org/ and download their latest version of the game, after installing the main game. With RCT2 there are tons of new features, like higher FPS, fast-forward time, Twitch-integration, RCT1 and RCT2 in one launcher and much more! The best thing, it is free and constantly being updated! Have fun!

Excellent expansion of the franchise
Having played the original RCT back before the expansions, I performed quite a bit of research before settling on this version. There are caveats to number 2 spelled out in a few of the other reviews, but the additional rides and themes ended up winning me over in the end. There is also a pseudo-sandbox mode available via manual manipulation in the scenario editor (as opposed to something like an automatic random map generator in a strategy game, which would have vaulted this sequel beyond its predessor in a heartbeat - what were they thinking??). It takes some extra effort to squeeze every drop of value from this game, and therein lies the crux: to go with 1 or 2. For $4 less (standard GOG price right now) the first game with its expansions is an instant pleaser, but the second game with its expansions allows me to custom-craft a huge blank park canvas with no monetary restrictions. I still recommend you do your own research, however, such as looking up old reviews on both games and each expansion. If you played RCT1 to death and ended up skipping RCT2 when it was new, you might find it more enjoyable to continue skipping it today and save yourself $4. But if you are like me and want to expand your experience with this awesome franchise, get thee to the scenario editor! (As a side note, I found it better to run the game executable as an administrator on Win7, just like every other game I play. Remember, most Good Ol' Games were written for versions of Windows that had no concept of non-administrators!)
