That's OK because no one's perfect, and you don't have to be to win this game. But you do have to be pretty darn good because this game is HARD. Fortunately, every time you die, all of the gold you've collected can be used to upgrade your manor, giving your next child a step up in life and another chance at vanquishing evil.

  • A genealogical roguelite where every death results in stronger children and a fresh new look at tackling the castle minions.
  • More than 30 unique traits affect gameplay in unique ways, such as Colorblindness, Gigantism, and Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
  • Procedurally generated castles that extend replay value by making every attempt a unique experience.

More addictive than you think

I've been a great fan of games like Alwas Legacy, Hollow Knight, Cuphead etc...and I saw this game and thought "hmm, it looks a bit like Alwas Legacy, maybe it's worth a try". Then I was reading it was random generated maps which I felt was a big minus and I didn't really want to install the game after I bought it on sale because it just felt like some random failure clone. But I was so wrong, I got hooked after 10 minutes and it's great. I want to highlight that you can actually stop the map from being randomized using the architect in the game and stick to the same level as long as you keep using the architect. I think I've died 400 times by now and I've reached level 99 and completed two bosses. I just can't stop playing and collect more cash for my perks. It's awesome!

Save your money

Rogue legacy is an interesting tried again, but ultimately not one worth buying. It's not horrible, but really not that great. Let's start off with a good: the game looks quite nice, the graphics are well put together particularly for an indie. The music and sound are also quite good. However the ultimate problem is gameplay, specifically difficulty. For some reason nearly all games that consider themselves to be "rogue like" think that means that they need to be really hard. Difficulty is not what makes a title like rogue interesting, rather it is the randomly generated world. It is having a different play through experience time and time again. Rogue legacy tries to make things easier what with generation system but ultimately it fails. The problem is that the learning curve is extremely steep, and you don't really get to carry anything over unless you do fairly well. So if you're having trouble initially, and keep dying, that's pretty much going to continue because you don't get to keep anything to build more power. It's a neat idea but the developers have fallen victim to the idea that more challenge equals a more "hard-core" game and thus is better. Challenge in games exist to make them interesting, not for its own sake, and rogue legacy does not seem to understand that. So I would recommend you save your money, and choose a different game of this type.

good idea

Good idea, it's just that sadly the controls are so poor that I can't justify a better score. And why do I have to remember which (btw from default seemlingly random) key was mapped to "B" or "X" to navigate the menus?

Surprisingly addictive

I actually like this rogue-like game. And this is from someone who believed his platform gaming days were over. I enjoyed this game so much, it made me want to buy a controller for my PC to make it easier to play (and it very much did - so highly recommend using a controller to play this game). I think the balance on this one is the best of all rogue-likes I've played. Yes - your first 10 runs (at least) will be very difficult and it won't seem like you are progressing. But a weapon upgrade, an armor upgrade, and a few more hit points (plus a little luck) will make a load of difference. You will find each type of character has its pluses - in the early stage of the game, you want use use knights (balanced fighter) or Barbarians (high life but softer hits). But once you get some upgrades, the high hit/crit characters become more fun. The castle is randomized though so at some point you will probably die in the first or second room...just take that one on the chin and try again :) The biggest con is the game is very repetitive, borderline monotonous...I don't mind that but I know it can be a big negative for some.

Good for a reason

It was good back then. It's good now. I just became worse at games.
