For years Toy-Volt had been producing games and toys for children all over the world. Within months of introducing their first products they shot to the top of their trade.
However, it appears that the products have gained minds of their own. Escaping from the shelves that held them prisoners they have entered the real world, and are now creating chaos as they enjoy their new found freedom... the Toy-volt R/C cars have Re-Volted!
Re-Volt lets you guide one of 28 remote control cars through insane race tracks set in unusual environments. Since the cars are the size of real remote control vehicles, objects found around the track are bigger than life. Curbs become huge walls, toys are obstacles, and everything is fair game to drive on, through, or over.
There are 13 different tracks spread throughout four Cups, including races set in museums, supermarkets, and settings which may look like your own neighborhood.
First played this game on Dreamcast when It first came out, Love this game to death. Love to see RC Revenge Pro for the PS2 make a return on here or on Steam. 🙏
As the title suggests, this game holds up fantastic and still has an active online community, pick up RGVL (a source port which uses OpenGL) and download a few mods (out of the 20+ years of mods out there, or make your own using Blender for the models and community software for handling and hitboxes) then search for the handful of active Discords for casual races and tournaments.
To the game itself: It's an easy to play, hard to master racing game where you take control over RC cars, the name of the game is speed control since there's no drifting per-say and you stop on a dime. Per the Mario Kart comparison, this Re-Volt's cups (for unlocking new tracks and cars) and battle mode rely on power-ups akin to those in Mario Kart (for instance, a firework that acts like a homing projectile, an oil can that causes lower grip, etc...) with a toy-like spin. A final addendum, this game has a really catchy OST, it's a mix of pop, eurobeat, and electronic music (if that's not your style, you can change the music easily should you have your desired music files in OGG format, just rename each to a track number and add them to the music folder (or the redbook folder for RVGL))
So my stance? Buy Re-Volt! Try it in vanilla (might not work in Linux, MacOS, or UNIX-derived systems without some tinkering) or grab the RVGL source port and fire up the game for some online multiplayer
Bottom line: if you are having difficulties getting the original on-disc game to run in recent Windows, THIS IS WHAT YOU WANT. It's absolutely worth a re-buy to save yourself the headache.
I recently came across the Re-Volt CD I had as a kid, and of course I immediately went to see if my Windows 10 gaming setup could install and run it. The answer was yes... at first... with caveats. The game ran just fine, but textures were missing and sound was spotty. Tweaking compatibility settings and applying various fixes did not help. Running the track editor required me to find a depricated DirectX-related .dll file on the internet and add it to the install location. (Scary. Bad. Do not try this at home, kids.) This was all annoying, but I could live with it, as the game did technically run well enough to play. So I played a bunch - won all the championships, unlocked half the cars. That's when the game randomly decided to wipe all my progress from the registry.
I have an above-average familiarity with stuff like this in Windows, but it was clear that whatever software incongruity was going on here was beyond my ability to rectify. I had fallen back in love with the game at this point, so you can imagine how happy I was to find it here on GOG.
As with 99% of the purchases I have made on GOG, the game just freaking works, unencumbered by the less-than-ideal workarounds, game-altering fan patches, and sketchy internet advice that is typically involved in getting games of this era to run. Having been able to closely compare this release to the original on-disc version, I can confirm that this is 100% the game you remember, just with support for modern screen resolutions.
It was absolutely worth the five bucks to be able to have this game back in my rotation.
I love this game. I searched for a while how to get digital copy. Even after all this years it looks as I remember. Nice smooth for the time. I remember spending late weekends playing. It is a piece of nostalgia. I consider a bargain the price for such a nice game.
