For years Toy-Volt had been producing games and toys for children all over the world. Within months of introducing their first products they shot to the top of their trade.
However, it appears that the products have gained minds of their own. Escaping from the shelves that held them prisoners they have entered the real world, and are now creating chaos as they enjoy their new found freedom... the Toy-volt R/C cars have Re-Volted!
Re-Volt lets you guide one of 28 remote control cars through insane race tracks set in unusual environments. Since the cars are the size of real remote control vehicles, objects found around the track are bigger than life. Curbs become huge walls, toys are obstacles, and everything is fair game to drive on, through, or over.
There are 13 different tracks spread throughout four Cups, including races set in museums, supermarkets, and settings which may look like your own neighborhood.
I used to have the N64 version and was hyped to see this on gog.com. The various different cars each had their unique strengths and drawbacks and the hitboxes were extremely realistic for that time (one car was so high above the track, it could pass over others). The track editor was amazingly fun to toy with and provided with loads of extra fun. I can only recommend this game.
I played Re-Volt a lot. It is my SuperMarioKart-kinda thing for the PC. The settings are nicely choosen (neighbourhood, supermarket, museum ...), the weapons cover everything you need (direct attack, zapping all, dropping oil etc.) and there are some shortcuts and alternative routes to find, oh and new cars to be achieved.
I already got this one for PC (back then), my PSOne and my Android phone (an emu that got virtual sticks for steering) and I am happy to get it on my PC again.
One thing I don't like that much: the AI cars get better if you are in front and it's quite impossible to get ahead too far, because the bots will get faster to catch up. So the game has you in range all the time (which should keep up the thrill). But it's just a small flaw.
Oh and the music: well it's a rather electronical kinda techno/dance style. But I like the soundtrack enough to hear the MP3 files I made from time to time.
I loved this game when I was a kid. It was the keystone PC game. It's also the first game I was ever able to find good user-created content for, and was easy to modify, though you need to get access to the files. I still have the disk at home, so I don't need a GoG copy, but I'd recommend it to anyone who's never played it.
This is the pinnacle of Acclaim at $10, this is a game worthy of your time. At $5, it is a STEAL. It may show it's age graphically, but a (still active) robust and established modding community has made everything from hundreds of new cars, custom tracks (outside the in-game track editor), to HD texture packs. The In-game track editor is simple yet robust enough to make interesting tracks without having modding tools or knowledge, at the trade-off of limited geometry and texture options. Excellent for LAN parties or similar scale network gaming.
I've played so many hours of this on Dreamcast. It's a wonderfully addictive combination of a kart racing game and a simulator. The RC cars are actually fairly unforgiving control wise and spin out if you turn too sharply or land a jump wrong. If you love challenging driving games, this one is a blast. It's also a blast even if you don't, because of the "kart racer" aspect. There are plenty of weapon power ups you can use to hassle your opponents with, along with slower, more easily controllable cars. And the best part is, if you only want to race, you can just turn power ups off. You can get exactly the experience you want out of Re-Volt. The PC version is also very nice, with full 16:9 HD support. Buy this game.
