Quake

I had never played this game until I bought it on GOG in 2016. No I grew up with DOOM, Duke Nukem 3D, UT99 and Quake 3, skipping great titles like Quake 1+2, Blood and so many more. As far as Quake is concerned it is basically the result of Id putting their FPS experience into taking the next step in gaming evolution, unlike Halflife 2 which was kind of a 8 hour tech demo, Quake shows you what it's capable of for ten seconds then throws the hordes of quake at you, This game is buy and large Hugely superior to DOOM in almost every way. The only issue is that the music is in a "unassembled" state, nudge nudge wink wink. but the disc images are included with the game and the whole of the nerd armies of the world can guide you to fixing it so I don't mind.

This remaster deserves 5 stars, but it requires a pointless bethesda account to download the fanmade content. It's pretty sad that they put a few hundred MB of data behind a wall when modern games are 10-200GB.

The release of this game is incomplete, no soundtrack and I can't change the screen size, the screen size just is to too small to play the game. I'm not a modder so I'm stuck with this game as is. I hope gog do something with game adding soundtrack and change the screen size. $9.99 for this game they should market it for $5.99. I'm disatisfied with the game.

I'm not a great fan of boomer shooters. Although I can understand the appeal for some, and I certainly respect their historical importance and technical limitations, I have found most classic FPS' such as Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Duke Nukem 3D to be quite a snore-fest. I was born in the 2000's so I suppose I've been spoiled by modern immersive games. Despite this, I found Quake to be an extremely enjoyable experience. The 3D graphics feel familiar to me and the levels don't feel overly abstract. The level design is also extremely intuitive: not once did I end up getting confused and overwhelmed by maze-like level design. Popular modern source-ports provide enhanced graphical features such as animation interpolation, which really do help to make the game more immersive for newcomers. Maybe it is because I am playing it on a laptop from 2014 that is running Linux and thus has to run the official KEX Engine port through a compatibility layer, but the official KEX engine port performs unacceptably poorly, with frequent stuttering. Ultimately I just ended up using the VKQuake source-port instead, which runs buttery smooth and has about the same graphical fidelity. Unfortunately this means I can't enjoy the multiplayer as the Quakespasm multiplayer is dead. It should be embarrassing that free sourceports can run circles around the official commercial product itself.

I was excited to finally play this old masterpiece of a game since i just built my first pc for gaming, and heard so much of games like doom and quake changing the game. So i finally get quake 1, and i noticed it was very quiet during gameplay....then i saw some guy on youtube playing, and heard some awesome music in the background. I thought my game had a glitch that didnt include the music....nope....later i found out it doesnt include it....i cant believe it. Dude id pay a bit more if i could have the music added....it just isnt the same without music...its actually kind of sad....
