Casual-friendly and a feast for the eyes

Speaking as someone whose sole experience with the franchise had been on the Apple 2 back in 1989, I came into this with no expectations whatsoever and enjoyed it very much. It is a *very* easy game, but the difficulty (or lack thereof) is not its selling point. That would be the award-winning artistic design, gorgeous environments, likeable characters, beautiful soundtrack, visually spectacular acrobatics and the gameplay's seamless flow. Superficial considerations, one might say, but that's pretty much what I expected when I got this game. The story is fine, the banter between the two main characters makes up for the otherwise empty world, and I found myself caring enough to want to know what happens after the cliffhanger ending (still waiting for that sequel, Ubisoft). Recommended, if you don't mind your endings a little on the open side.

Potential, but bad

I beat this game when it was released, even my friends who loved PoP didn't buy this game. So I'm the only one I still know personally to ever even play this specific, and sadly, last version of the series. Honestly, I'm curious about the development of this game, because it's very odd. The combat system is a strange combo/rhythm ... "thing" that I never enjoyed, and honestly, all the fights just come across as frustrating. It feels like they made one of the only 2 things this game does, combat and exploration, a weird minigame, rather than an actual thought-out combat system. The other piece is exploration, which is fine. I don't enjoy parkour necessarily, PoP has more going for it than just free, fluid movement. It's set in a really cool world with great things to see, and while this world is graphically amazing it's, for story reasons, completely fucking empty. So you run around dead worlds, with nothing but light orbs in them, reach blatant arena areas to fight copy-paste minigame DDR dance battles with evil dudes, and eventually do the same thing again, but for the boss. I titled this "potential" because I really feel like this exact world, in a different game, would have been amazing to experience. With NPC's, actual combat, an intriguing story. Instead, I guess the developers played Shadows of Colossus and lost a bet, because what we got is the strangest PoP experience that rightfully killed it off for good.

Some install bugs

It's a fun and pretty game, but to get it running right requires a 'fix'. The Launcher that tries to run the game REQUIRES the Visual C 2005 SP1 library installed, and doesn't include it as part of the install. The launcher is required to set any of the game settings, otherwise it runs at 1280x768 at low detail.

A nice experiment gone terribly wrong

Prince of Persia, remake of the sand trilogy, is probably the second worst entry ( yup, I'm considering PoP 3d too) of the entire series. Just scroll past this comment and you'll see them in more detail in other reviews ( Listing them here it's simply a waste of time... although all the flaws could be summarized in ''dull'' and ''boring as hell''). Still, it does not mean the game it's without any credit: I believe the fights were orchestrated to make look like a beautifully choreography, and for its time some visuals are pretty immersive ( not all of them, others are again pretty dull and common). Plus, the soundtrack is on point and gives that PoP vibe that one could expect from the game. Problem is, everytime the game tries to do something inspired and unique, it always comes out as dull, repetitive and something seen a BILLION times. To give just an example, the game literally opens with something just so.. terribly common that you could literally mistake it for any single 3d platform rout there and you'll be unable to tell any discerning difference, and, although the intro was built to be a right-in-the-action experience, it was done so at the expense of.. everything else. So, worth buying? mmmmmmmm if you are a fan of PoP or platform games, yes... but only if discounted. If not: stay away.

Collectible extravaganza

The game essentially is about collecting over 500 light orbs in some semi-open world. It's like Pacman in 3D, only much worse. After just an hour or so, you have essentially seen everything that there is to see. The map is laid out in a way, and the orbs are placed in such a way, that you have to traverse the same sections again and again. It's awful. The story is simple, but intriguing. The characters on the other hand... I mean, they aren't quite as awful, but the "Prince" is too much of a modern hipster. The character and relation development doesn't really feel natural. But to be honest, they are quite forgettable. Combat is... bad. Just bad. It's stiff, unresponsive, too "cinema-like", full of QTE and insane button mashing, and fights can either be over in seconds or last for a (literal) eternity. That's one of the worst regressions I have ever seen. I have really tried to like this game. It has so much untapped potential and is, in principle, a welcome change. The visuals look astonishing. The acrobatics feel great and Elika is such a wonderful addition. It's quite delightful seeing them working together to overcome obstacles. But in the end, it's just a tedious chore. With quite a daring bitter sweet ending, I might add.
