If you enjoyed system shock 2 and bioshock, you will enjoy prey too. This game is very underrated and for me it just demonstrates how arkane studios knows what they are doing. I got this game on steam and later saw it came out here in gog. If i would have known that i would have waited to buy it here!
I took about a month to finish this game and that's playing 1 hour a night to 4 or more as I felt like it. The different options you have to solve a particular problem, i.e. get into a room, were very satisfying.
I only broke down to read hints once or twice and instead just banged at the game for hours and hours until I finally figured out what to do (I have a lot of free time). Figuring it out on your is very satisfying of course.
You can save wherever you like, including quick saves, so you can "try" something. This is a port, but in truth, most ports from playstation games I've found to be unbelievably tight game wise. I don't remember crashing even once.
The visuals in the game are the best I've ever seen as it relates to a space station. There is NO problem losing yourself in this game. Having spent five hours just now on the final mission (straight, only breaking for food, etc), I am SO happy I now have the DLC to play.
Thank you GOG for getting this game to sell, it's so good, I almost wish I had a playstation so I could have played it sooner, but I can't even conceive of playing with a controller, I am forever bound to a keyboard and mouse.
tl;dr Get this game and enjoy, combat, stealth, puzzles, moral choices, and amazingly solid game play.
Prelude. I never played the original Prey from 2006. From what i read, it isn't related in any way.
I did not know what awaits me.
The game is amazing in the science fiction theme. The atmosphere is intense and once you encounter the first mimic, you generally view everything differently in your surrounding.
What stuck with me is the atmosphere in the game. The graphics, i have an old graphics card, is amazing. So that may not be for everyone as for me.
But i liked the solving aspect of the game. Puzzles here and there and the overall balance.
If you play the plus game (i am not sure if that's already with hard perhaps) you actually bleed and get sick from radiation.
I thought that was pretty great.
Another aspect i like was the space walk. The sheer openness and the feel of helplessness made an impression on me.
So yes, i enjoyed every minute of the game.
If you liked Bioshock or Half-Life, you will like this game too. Story is of course different but the game has its chills and scares.
Recommended.
...and then the real fun starts! I was amazed by the level desing, gameplay mechanics and enemies (especially mimics) that this game presents and just had incredible fun playing through the game. And then I started the Mooncrush DLC and I realised that just as I thought it can't get any better...it does.
Full disclosure, at the start of the game it is implied that using typhon powers might bring negative consequences, so I decided not to invest in them, HUGE MISTAKE, take typhon powers, otherwise you'll end up playing a very boring and slow paced game, like I did.
That said, the "human powers" route allowed me to see the flaws of the game more clearly:
Horror, action, stealth, survival, the game does it all, but excels at none, as the name implies, you are not the hunter, you are the prey, and the enemies are eager to tear you apart, they are faster, stronger and numerous,.taking them head on is suicidal unlñess you heavily invest in typhon powers, because your weapons are a total joke, even with sneak critical hits you'll need more than a few rounds to down a phantom, which brings me to...
The stealth, which is utterly broken. Is your best bet, but the sneak routes are few and not a guarantee of your success since enemies can detect you even when you are above their heads, hiding in the shadows, or they hear you even when you are crouching for no particular reason. And as I mentioned before you can shoot an enemy while sneaking to get a damage bonus, but then you'll have to hide for a long time before attempting another sneak attack
And talking about survival, the game has a limit on the resources you can gather, which could hint at survival mechanics, but truth is, you'll need to squander a lot of resources in order to really run out of materials to craft ammo.
In the end what kept me playing was the story, the setup has its issues, but for the most part it holds up pretty well, the story takes the amnesic hero trope and spins it around, revealing how a huge dickhead you are, or were, letting you decide what kind of character you wanna be and arriving at a satisfactory ending( asuming your decisions are consistent) with a mind blowing plot twist in the postcredits
So yeah, I'd recommend it if you like immersive sims, just take the damn typhon powers
