Good survival game, lots of backtracking

Well, the game itself is good. The athmosphere is really nice, graphics are great and the mood of the game is really gloomy. However, be aware that this game has A) a horrible mission tracker where you are guided to places you can't reach for now or have no idea what to do there. B) a lot of back tracking. You eventually visit every place on that space station around 10 times. 20 if you (like me) have fun on doing the side quests. However, some things are just a chore so I guess my suggestion would be to stick with the main mission mostly, unselect missions you don't want / can't do for now since they are distracting and enjoy the game's survival mode. Don't but it if you want a new shooter. Ammo and Health Packs are always limited. The game also gives some tiny choices. I guess it feels a bit like the old Half Life. So it would be too much to say it is a role playing game but at least the story and dialogues make the game a bit more interesting (even though the ending falls a bit short). About the DLC, well... I must admit I played it for maybe 20 minutes and left it. It feels like it doesn't belong to the game at all. Maybe I missed it but I was hoping for the story to continue but as far as I can see it doesn't look like. I would advise you to read some reviews about it before you buy the complete edition. About the base game, I bought it as an offer and played 20+ hours on a 90% (almost completionist) game. Consider it 12-15 if you focus on the more interesting main story than the "find every person on the station"-chores.

Prey

Hi,      futuristic, suspenseful, exciting & with immersive intelligent voicing in a catastrophic experiment outbreak, explore the derelict space station. FPS perspective, many items to collect, neuro implant types, suit mods, upgrade weapons with (OSOWC) i.e. on screen on weapon counters, like, silenced pistol, shotgun, boltcaster, gloo gun + more. Superb maps, inventory, objectives, re-readable (notes, emails + on large screen terminals, books & playback of audio logs). Exceptional unmatched graphics & sounds. Realistic search & go anywhere allowed. Recycle items for items. Various fullscreen resolutions or windowed allows switching your desired desktop applications at will. Has the norm keys like, jump, sneak, examine, run, reload, info screens, bright flashlight, item quick keys, camera bob & roll (0-100) sliders, dialogue & hud choices on & off, very immersive & a real learning initiative. Fantastic.

Medicore Combat Decent Rest of Game

I want to say first off that I don’t think Prey was a bad game. Some of what I’ll say will sound a bit negative but overall it is a solid game. It is like a space version of Bioshock and Dishonored but it has worse combat than either of those. It has many things it did well but I didn’t enjoy the combat much. I found there to be too few weapons to use for my liking. There is a shotgun; pistol and a wrench as your main weapons. There are some grenade type weapons you can use that have different properties and there are powers you can choose to learn. Overall though I wasn’t interested in the alien powers and found the environmental attacks such as throwing furniture at enemies cute but not something that I wanted to do often. I also didn’t like the zero gravity parts as I found moving around annoying as I kept flying past where I wanted to go. There were also some timed missions which is a game feature I despise. Another game idea I hate that was used was respawning enemies. After killing all enemies in an area I could return later and there were new ones there. Now they weren’t the same ones, it was trying to say that the aliens were moving about the ship and nowhere was safe but the timing was way off. I could leave an area and return seconds later and there would be new enemies. You may say the game doesn’t follow real time but the timed missions were indeed using real time so I maintain it was poorly done. Many objectives were also very vague about where to go or what to do. Others were very specific or easy to figure out so it was a toss up on whether I would enjoy the mission. Lastly I was hoping that there would be some explanation about just what the Nightmare Typhon was but it never came. This thing stalks you across the station and even if you kill the thing it will come back later and hunt you more. I thought that maybe it would play a bigger role than just annoying me but I was wrong.

Nice surprise

I have to say I was really surprised by this game. I played the original Prey, havent't watched any gameplays from this one but I knew the game isn't related story wise. I somewhat expected it to be a shooter with a gameplay similar to the old one. I liked Bioshock and Deus Ex so this was a pleasant surprise. The story is cool, I like the setting and the style of the station. The low grav serctions are an interesting addition. What I did not like very much was the gunplay. In the beginning, without neuromods, you are super slow, there are little guns and ammo is scarce. Sneaking past enemies didn't work well for me. Using turrets against them works in a limited fashion since most annoying enemies just rip them to shreds in no time and you end up using you precious ammo. Great game overall, I higly recommend it.

System Shock 2.5

This game lives and breathers System Shock 2, it even has some more or less hidden references (i.e. Looking Glass, the lift being stuck in the aboretum), so I think it's a crime that the publisher changed the title. In many ways, Prey is a bit too close to SS2 for my tastes. It seems like the developers wanted it to feel the same and neglected their own ideas over it. However, it's not SS2. It starts out as bleak, but the atmosphere loosens up quite a bit halfway through. The game mechanics are well thought through. It matters a lot, what abilities you learn. Upgrading you jumping ability and using jetpack upgrades makes you able to glide through the levels to the point you can almost fly. Investing learning alien abilities can make everything much more tedious because security turrets start attacking you. There is a lot of room of different playstyles. An equal amount of thought was put into the equipment. Weapons that seem useless show their true potential when upgraded, while the more conventional arms can be severly lacking in the late game. Granades can be used in creative ways. All this can impact the difficulty of your playthrough. I found this a bit problematic, because it's easy to find exploits and render a challenging game too easy. The environments are fairly big, varied and stylish. The pseudo open world design, though, is the biggest flaw of the game in my opinion: Quest markers often lead you astray and in the late game you get overwhelmed with fetch quest after fetch quest. Traversing the ship quickly is the weakest point of the game, as it means you may have four or five load screens after another. The hectic late game with lackluster enemies combined with weak endings ruined the game a bit for me. It's absolutely great in the beginning to the middle, but feels severly rushed at its closure. But the overal experience is defenitely worth 4 out of 5 stars.
