Ready for a tactical entry?

If I realise how old these two games are, I just have to be amazed how excellent they are. Even today they provide wonderful insight into the tactics, methods, etc. of SWAT. It is absolutely right choice for everyone who is interested in how does SWAT work.

Flawed gems

SWAT 2: Bust into a hospital. Booby trap the entrances with grenades on strings. Take hostages. Hand out religious pamphlets. Demand the police send you takeway. Feed the prisoners. Demand the police send you money. Grab it. Make off with the hostages and the cash. The Terrorist campaign in SWAT2 has one of the most unique mechanisms I have seen in a game: the possibility to conduct hostage negotiations, and make the demands. Demand food, demand cash, demand a getaway vehicle, try to escape with hostages to brainwash. Unfortunately it's flawed in many ways. Preparation time between missions is cumbersome and click-heavy. Issuing commands is cumbersome. AI for your own people is bad/nonexistent and you have to micromanage too many of them. If you're a game connoiseur who can force yourself to slog through these frustrations, then SWAT2 will reward you with a very unique game experience.

Good luck finding the right plugins...

Swat 2 needs some obscure third party video plugins, GOG should have the courtesy of providing them in the game's files. Swat 1 also has issues with the save files, you need to manually backup the file or it overwrites when you boot the game and sometimes the saving won't register. Have this installed in an older windows vista PC.

Fun being the terrorists in SWAT 2

If you're after tactical gameplay, playing the SWAT is fun. Playing a lunatic terrorist however, is way too easy. You can spray your rifle at the entrance, the moment SWAT enters your door, and you will easily kill off, or incapacitate them. If they're still alive, on the ground, just spray them again till they're all dead. That was one of the biggest drawbacks. It was way too easy, but I'll give it a 5 star because it was a fun game for its time.

Loved it

Oh yes, SWAT 1 was awesome. No replayability but I absolutely loved this game. Still have many fond memories. Would still have the disks if my mum didn't clear out my old room when I went to university, haha.
