This was definitely my favorite racing game when i was a kid but when we got a newer comp i couldnt play the game due to compatibility issue. but this version lets me play it on my windows 7 pc again. very pleased witht his game.
This racing game deserves its place on GOG. People can complain about its simplicity, but that's what it is supposed to be. Fun and easy to get in to, with a WIDE variety of cars and tracks to choose from, and car customization for good measure. Also the graphics are beautifully colored, if a bit outdated. One of the only things I have against POD is the storyline. Firstly, there's no need for a storyline when you're making a racing game, and secondly, the story is QUITE absurd. (You may disagree)
Other than that, great game. Ignore the storyline and you've got a decent arcade racer with a unique Sci Fi theme and a slew of cars and tracks. Highly recommended.
POD Gold is a solid arcade racing game. It takes some fiddling around to get it working properly, but then it works and looks fine for a game from 97. It has pretty good controls, solid two player options and solid game modes. Nothing mind blowing, but you get your money's worth with it.
The physics based driving once you get the hang of it is pretty consistent, and it lets tracks get wacky with jumps, ramps, shortcuts, and such. Lots of high contrast textures at relatively fast speeds make learning a new level or running through a familiar one a satisfying visual puzzle. The expansion tracks in particular really push the limits of what the driving gameplay is capable of.
Sometimes contact with the other racers can be a little frustrating, but it's also satisfying to hold them off.
With a few extension programs you can get the game looking and running great. It's unfortunate that there isn't a way to bundle them together for this release.
This is a nostalgic favorite of mine, something I used to play on christmas morning with my cousins before the adults would wake up. I remember getting lost in dead ends and left behind a lot as a kid, but I think it's an acceptable consequence that enables satisfying routing compared to just a straight track or obvious shortcuts. Many of them are hidden or require particular approaches and jumps at tremendous speed.
