Horrid

Why does nobody discuss "naval" combat

So for the first 5-10 hours I was having a decent time in the game. Then I really started to see the flaws, and when "naval" combat started is where I just couldn't do it anymore. Land combat is frequent and can be a bit frustrating at times, but overall is fun. Early game is a bit rough due to the lack of available chars, this can be fixed by buying mercenaries, no big deal. The biggest issue I ran into was the lack of explanation of skills and talents and the way the UI is set up is atrocious. My second issue was massive bugs and extremely poor optimization. I get random stutters and screen tearing while walking or fighting, there doesn't seem to be a trigger it just appears to be totally random. Now on to the bugs I ran into, the first was getting stuck in the map. Upon walking my team through the quarry one of my members stepped out of bounds somehow and got stuck inbetween 2 types of terrain, nothing I could do would get him to move and I had to reload a prior save. That brings me to the save bug, after reloading my save I went to speak with a person to obtain a quest, only to find out the quest was no longer there no matter what I did, after checking my inventory the quest item was in my inventory even though I was using a prior save, gone were the XP, monetary and item rewards, and I had no way to get them. Even by going saves days back and retracing my steps I had the exact same issue. If all thats not bad enough the "naval" combat is the straw that broke the camels back. This is all text based, no actual combat and its poorly explained, even after disabling an enemy ships sails I am still unable to position myself in front or behind to get uncounterable bombardment. Then I read online that you just jigg then stop then fire, rinse repeat. That nonsense worked everytime. TL:DR Land combat - Decent Bugs - Frequent / Including save bugs. Optimization - Poor Naval combat - Worst i've ever seen.

Great game!

Nice combat experience, graphics, storyline. I can't find anything that is not good. It is really worth it! For the best experience, you should play Pillars of Eternity I before.

It's Turn Based!!

I'm sooo happy I can finally play one of these big story heavy rpg's now. I can't play RTwP games at all. I have no twitch skills. This game is now awesome for me.

Very good

It is a game for people who love exploring - if you prefer to follow the main quest only, it's not a game for you. The main plot has six quests and if you ignore side quests and tasks, your walkthrough will be short. In Deadfire even the simpliest task can lead to the most interesting quests in the game, and there is a lot of content in the game. There are numerous bounties and loot to find and crew members or sidekicks in the weirdest places. I loved the colonial setting of the story and the ship replacing the traditional RPG castle (like Caed Nua). Recruiting crew is great and all companions are in one place. The ship can be upgraded in many ways, and if we keep our crew happy, they will delight our ears with shanties, which were actually written and composed especially for the game. One of the strongest and the weakest parts of the game are companions. They have realistic personalities with a great system of relationships (including with one another) basing on their character traits, also it is possible to develop romantic relationships with some of them. Some companions leave during the game and usually there is no reasoning with them. For example, I spent a huge amount of time with Pallegina, and had a maxed reputation with her, just to be forced to kill her because I didn't choose her faction. Also, romance in Deadfire is just... dull. After starting a relationship with Aloth, I liked it that he started commenting on numerous events and NPCs that my team met, but it was disappointing that the ending of his story depended on one line of dialog during the end of his side quest. There is no way to change it later in the game. There were also no additional dialog options, except for the breakup line! One more line and a few sentences to exchange would really make it more meaningful. Tl;dr, in my opinion Deadfire is a great game with a very interesting setting that, with a little bit of polishing of the companions feature, would make it one of my tops.

Pretty good game, but horribly optimised

Game is actually really fun, combat's a bit too easy tho, at least on classic difficulty i can let my party fight without any input and they will easily win 90% of the time. The actual problems are with the optimisation and memory leaks, game already runs with strangely low fps and gets worse as time passes, needing to reset to make it "good" again.
