It's like Baulder's Gate with guns... Companions are humorous, there's like a bagillion references to other games and culture hidden throughout the adventure and its ability to make you the most important person ever is shown well. The map system reminds me of Baulder's gate or icewind dale and the ability to talk to your companions allows you to get to know the people you will know to trust your back.
This game wanted to be the successor of Baldur's Gate, and succeeded in doing a lot of things right.
The mechanics are really good and I wouldn't dare going into detail here but I will say a few things about them. Characters have abilities/spells that they can use a limited number of times per rest (when your party heals and gains some specific bonuses) or combat. It might seem a bit weird in the beginning but it adds an extra level of depth and the opportunity to balance the game. There is "sneaking" but it's quite ineffective compared to other RPGs from the same genre, which actually gives the game a good balance and realism but it's not very interesting and it has limited usefulness. The game also has options for a ton of quality of life improvements, like unlimited inventory and you can loot a large area at once, among some of them.
The main story is not told all that great, you're being thrown into it very sudden and you're being told how to feel about it. With time the story and the lore of this world will grow on you and I believe the story gets better; I also liked The White March story line. I would like to say here that The White March not only brings you lots of new locations and stories but it also adds mechanics to the game, so I strongly recommend that you play with it.
I liked the graphic art style but the sound track was unimpressive. You get to have a stronghold, which I find really cool; I don't think that this is a spoiler because you have a stronghold button on the interface from the start, it just doesn't do anything until you have control over it.

I'll try to keep this review short- Pillars of Eternity is fantastic, its gameplay and character creation are balanced and the worldbuilding is superb. The characters are delightful and each ally has their own sidequest that fleshes out their character even more. The choices you make actually matter in the grand scheme of things, which makes the world really feel alive. This also allows for great replayability and roleplay. Every sidequest feels important, so you'll always feel rewarded for your efforts. The main story is only okay in my opinion, but everything else is so stellar that I can overlook this.
Long story short, if you're a fan of classic RPGs like Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights and somehow haven't played this game, I reccommmend getting it as soon as possible.
I haven't had so much fun with a cRPG since Icewind Dale. Well written storry, compelling and captivating environments (especially in the DLCs). I can't recommend it enough!
The skill system, the combat and all that is great in this game. I also loved how your stats, gender, race and background all offered some different options in conversations. They really delivered the R in RPG in this game.
Where it kind of lost me a bit was the story and the NPCs. It all felt rather generic, and it just didn't hold my interest much. Most of the NPCs I found to be rather on the dull side as well. Nothing memorable or anything like that.
Still. I would absolutely recommend this one to every rpg fan out there. But it isn't the best rpg I have ever player. But far from the worst either.
