Why buy on GOG.COM?
DRM FREE. No activation or online connection required to play.
I own this game on Steam and you should not buy it. It is cheaply made, there is pretty much nothing to than to run through the rooms in a random fashion and that is it. No character development during the game, the art is cheap and overall, the game is forgettable. The developers berating their fans, threatening other developers and insulting everyone on Reddit and Steam is another layer that makes me wish I would have never bought this.
No, this review is not influenced by the fact that the (former) dev is a huge asshole. Yes, it's influenced by the fact that the devs promised features that aren't (and won't be) in the game.
This game is one of those "it's like X combined with Y and a bit of Z", but where somehow all the bad parts of X, Y and Z ended up in the game, and not the good ones.
The game looks awful, the "art" is basically BLOOM EVERYWHERE and LOL VOXELS, but not the good, real voxels like in voxatron, the shitty fake voxels like in minecraft, but somehow worse. And the menus and GUI look like something from a 2006 flash game made by a 14 year old on newgrounds. That awful "bloody" font in the title? It's everywhere.
The gameplay is, like other review said, "Binding of Isaac meets Serious Sam". No, this doesn't mean "Over the top fun shooting in procedural generated rooms while unlocking awesome loot that changes the gameplay drastically". It means "Run backwards while shooting and ocassionally dodging, in a game that will enclose you in a room until you beat it. Fun not included".
If you really, REALLY, want to play some procedural generated shootan, Try Tower of Guns. Seriously, do not buy this game.
I bought this for 75 cents and I asked for a refund. That's how bad it is.
Ignoring the fact that the developers are jerks and the scandal that that this game was involved in, you should really avoid this game.
On paper the game sounds like a blast: a first person rougelike under the sea with multiple classes. But then you play it... It is the most generic shooter imaginable, not as bad as something like COD but this is one of the most uninspired games I've seen in a while. The Minecraft-like graphics don't help matters, sometimes its pretty but most of the time it is either ugly or distracting enough in that it ruins the game. It is incredibly easy to lose your bearings and end up losing track of everything around you, combine that with the cheap monsters and you've got a recipe for yelling at your computer screen.
I don't want to enter full rant mode so let me sum up: this game has great ideas but horribly execution, hate it not just because of the controversy it spawned but because it is a bad game.
I don't really care much about the drama the developer started. The game is now in the hands of someone else and, frankly, I don't care that much what he did, as long as the game is good. Too bad it isn't.
There are times that fusing ideas works well and times that it does not. I think this had the potential to be a fun game, but it falls short in being enjoyable. This is one of the few games I play for more than 5 minutes, then wonder what I'm doing with my life.
The guns are boring, the interface sucks, the gameplay just makes you wonder why you even bother. I'm not sure I can describe why, it just does. For me, shooting games need to have enjoyable shooting, which this game does not. The weapons are pretty weak in design and execution, the enemies are cheap, and the environments just lack charm and character.
This is a dull game. It could be rescued if the weapons were made interesting or the environments made a little more charming, but I doubt that will happen. I would pass on this one.
How this game made it into GOG is beyond comprehension.
Completely unpolished, abominable presentation, terrible sound effects and unbalanced weapons.
The only challenge in this game is figuring out which "power-ups" don't slow you down to a crawl and kill you. More often than not, when you beat a boss you will be presented with a "power-up" that gives you twice the hit points, or twice the armor in return for a half speed downgrade until you become so slow you won't be able to run away from the most harmless of enemies.
Beating the game consists of trial and error until you know what's a good power up and what's not. Yes you can't see the effect before you pick it up.
Easily wins the title for worst game on GOG. Save the money and go play Tower of Guns instead.
