Gothic Story, Frantic Gameplay. Painkiller is a first-person horror shooter, designed to satisfy a gamer's hunger for intense, fast-paced action. It's an adrenaline addict's nightmare, where hellish monsters swarm in seemingly endless mobs.
Graphically, Painkiller is unmatched. The proprietary PAIN Engine puts out an unbelievably high polygon count, while adding increased texture quality and the latest lighting and shadowing techniques, including soft shadows, DOT3 bump mapping, water reflections, glass simulation, volumetric light and fog, and more. Plug in the Havok 2.0 physics engine, and you get a realistic environment in a totally fantastical setting.
Stranded in a place between Heaven and Hell, your time of judgment is at hand. The Underworld is on the verge of unholy war, and you are but a pawn in the infernal battle. As you fight for your purification, the truths behind the deceptions are revealed.

Why buy on GOG.COM?
DRM FREE. No activation or online connection required to play.
It is Serious Sam, but nowhere as much fun - Buy the various Sams on GoG and get your partner to play through them with you, that's where the fun is. Not here.
The Bad:
*Everything! - Shoot until all enemies die (And you don't even need to reload in the process) - That is all. Next area will be opened then. Area not opened? Find the creature you missed. All game has the same type of enemies recycled with a different skin. The chargers that after a while you learn that there is really no need to gun and run from them and you just use your special saw (The painkiller) weapon to mow them down quickly (It even kill tanks faster then bazooka). The enemies who has perfect accuracy no matter where they stand.
* AI is moronic and I bet I have seen less enemies get stuck by a small ledge in doom than in this game.
* Physics are quanky - At first it is cool and all but after you begin to jump above enemies like mario and shooting them below while they fly to the sky, it will get annoying hard.
* No story, no character interactions with anything,,,, Just kill hordes of enemies, rise and repeat. Unreal Tournament 2004 has a better campaign than this game. I am not even kidding.
* Hit detection is the worst offender. Unless you pixel perfect your rocket launcher will miss and so does your stake gun.
* Weapons - The game just lacks weapons, the expansion offers 2 more but the arsenal is pathetic . How can a game like this that is no more than a shooting gallery have so little weapons???
* Cheap ass deaths - Be ready to hit your quick save button every minute or so. Since the game has nothing to offer it will make you suffer with it's cheap kill surprises.
* Too many more things to list here... I will not even bother.
The Good:
* LOL... If I must think of at least one good thing to say about the game is that it probably had some nice multiplayer action.... But you can't find a game of multplauer for this game. So there's that.
The Ugly:
* The story and cinematics.... Oh boy.... 'Bad' as word will just not descriptive enough for it.
Painkiller Black is a package that offers both the main game and it's DLC 'Battle Out of Hell'. My review focuses solely on the single-player and comes with zero nostalgia as I've played it for the first time in 2017.
This is a wave-based FPS in the style of Serious Sam, but with better level design, more enemy types and original weapons. The main campaign is great, despite some unfortunate design choices regarding boss fights which feature one off gameplay elements that are more confusing than fun.
Most levels are amazing and made me wish this was a different type of game that gave me more reasons to wonder around. The Palace is one of the better looking 3D environments I remember traversing.
The sheer amount of enemy types in the main campaign is very impressive. Seems like each level has unique enemy types. No lazy color-swapping here. The music is pretty rad if you are into metal and the way the game uses it to alert you that enemies are coming is a cool idea that works great.
My only big complaint about the main campaign is the fact the game locks you out of some levels, which are only accessible on higher difficulty, but you are not informed of this before you start. In fact, the game's manual states that Insomnia difficulty is the intended difficulty in which the game was meant to be played. If that was truly the case, why force you to replay the entire game in a higher difficulty to access those levels? Makes no sense.
The DLC 'Battle Out of Hell' is easily the weakest part of the game. The 10 extra levels it features ignore most of what makes the game good and in some cases seem intended for a different game entirely. Only 2 of them were truly memorable, while most felt rushed or just poorly designed. The new gun is pretty cool, but doesn't add much.
Overall, Painkiller is a must play for FPS fans. The Painkiller is the best melee weapon ever in a videogame. Just be warned about the DLC not being nearly as good as the main game
