Oxenfree is a supernatural thriller about a group of friends who unwittingly open a ghostly rift. Play as Alex, a bright, rebellious teenager who brings her new stepbrother Jonas to an overnight party on an old military island. How you deal with these events, your peers, and the ominous creatures you’ve unleashed is up to you.
YOU determine every aspect of Alex's story while exploring Edwards Island, uncovering the base's dark past, and changing the course of your friends' lives.
A mind-bending supernatural adventure full of mystery and terror
An intelligent conversation system that changes the story and your relationships based on every decision
A unique radio mechanic that allows Alex to communicate with mysterious spectres and manipulate her world
I don't know what the developers did for optimization, but my computer should be able to run this game, and it doesn't. I have several other unity-based games (both 2D and 3D), and they run just fine.
For some reason, this game is incredibly slow, even with really small resolution and low settings.
Developers should fix this!
Here's the basics, BUY THIS GAME IF you like interesting characters, great stories, and dialogue options. If you want to kick back and be taken for a ride through a story, which will be a little different depending if you want to be nice or mean to the characters. DON'T BUY THIS GAME IF you're expecting a whole big lively world you're going to explore that's filled with things to do and people to see. There's little to do except talk, and by talking I mean three dialogue options. You're either talking or walking around pretty scenery. Not saying that that's bad, just don't go through the game or buy the game expecting a deep lore, or a deep world, or something lively with stuff to do. Also, this is NOT a scary game per se. Not once did it make me jump. The tag "HORROR" is a little bit of a oversimplification. The story has ghosts, yeah, but that's more of a theme to the story. This game takes you for a ride, not unlike a book.
Now, if you read the first paragraph, and you're interested in buying this game, I am going to tell you what the game did right, in my opinion.
- The story is great. Not too educated at what makes a good story, so that's all I can tell you. At the surface level, you have your ghosts, and creepy things are happening, and that's fun. But what makes the story particularly great is...
- The characters! They're great, it's the real charm of the game, and that's where alot the fun comes from, you choosing a dialogue option and seeing what the characters would say, and finding out more about them and they're past, especially the main character's at the end.
- Music is great, it fits to the theme and adds a metric tonne of atmosphere. Really reminded me we're dealing with ghosts, 'n radiowaves and the such.
- I found the art very pretty, the environment is well drawn, and the pictures of the characters together are adorable, I find.
Don't look for a game. Look for a story.
If you watch the Documentaries, you'll see that the aim of Night School Studios to achieve was to enhance the immersion of Telltale games - and they've done by implementing a very dynamic dialouge system. This goes against the generic 'checkpoint -> trigger a dialouge' event and honestly speaking, I had immensely great time with it. The conversations immerse the players, progress regarding the story (more or less) and is just genuinely well executed by an awesome VA cast. The story was great and made me want to dig inside more - it also has multiple endings, of which all were quite satisfying if you ask me. The art was soothing, yet very dark at times.
Now the game had a few distinct not-so-prominent aspects as well. At first, some paths seemed way too thin (though after getting used of the control, this became a rather subtle issue) and the movement just felt extrmely slow sometimes (I think a 'run' option could have balanced this out - but then some people might be tempted to just rush through the entire game in an hour). I often encountered the problem where the dialouges faded away quicker than I wanted - that's not particularly the game's fault, but because I got used to over-think each and every dialouge the game provides and choose the most appropriate one (but then, we can't over-think every possible sentence in real life as well so we just pick what our intuition says in a within fraction of a second).
Nonetheless, I admire the devs for a such passionate work and I hope to see more from them in the near future!
Oxenfree has the most influential choices out of all mainstream 'choice based' videogames. I started my second playthrough instantly after end credits and it was even better the first one
