Description
In the remote mountains of Colorado, horrors wait inside Mount Massive Asylum. A long-abandoned home for the mentally ill, recently re-opened by the “research and charity” branch of the transnational Murkoff Corporation, the asylum has been operating in strict secrecy… until now.

Acting on a tip from an anonymous source, independent journalist Miles Upshur breaks into the facility, and what he discovers walks a terrifying line between science and religion, nature and something else entirely. Once inside, his only hope of escape lies with the terrible truth at the heart of Mount Massive.
  • Stealth-based gameplay, with parkour-inspired platforming elements.
  • You are no fighter - if you want to survive the horrors of the asylum, your only chance is to run... or hide.
  • Outlast’s setting and characters are inspired by real asylums and cases of criminal insanity.

Found the heck out of that footage

I don't know what's up with all these incorrectly negative reviews, this game is wonderful, charming and a scrumptious bona fide modern horror classic. The gameplay is simple, stealth, avoiding enemies, finding your way through. Where it shines is the singularly disturbing and thick atmosphere, with an interesting horror concept/story underneath for us to discover. It's been a favorite of mine for a long time. Unfortunately, the GOG version doesn't include the achievements which feature some fun bonus challenges, but that didn't hinder my enjoyment too much, anyway. Also loved the DLC, Whistleblower, giving me another viewpoint from which to explore the location and featuring a new, even more disturbing main enemy. Also worth it at this point, IMO. If you're into horror at all, you should grab it, it's a fun ride.

Really good

Loved this game, played on the sofa with my girlfriend and it was a pretty unique experience. Yeah, it goes full speed on jump scares, but... they'll freak you out, no matter what. The DLC is worth buying, it may be a little repetitive compared to the main game, but if bought on a sale, it's worth it. Also, it's story interesects nicely with the main game and you get to know what happens AFTER the main story. If you like first person horror games, just buy it.

Simple concept, scary game

The scariest game I've yet played. Highly recommended for anyone who likes to experience terror in the dark. This game is exhilarating and tense throughout, rarely giving you a breather before sending you off into another dark corridor with some demented variant. It's not a perfect game, by far. The level design is very plain and linear, and it has annoying design features like no toggle button for crouch, not placing notes and documents at the top of your notebook list, etc. More significantly, the game does not allow for any creativity in how you evade monsters. There's really only one way to do so in a given monster chase, so you either do it, or not. The player cannot really experiment with different hiding options beyond those provided in the game (beds and lockers). The game is still fun, I just wish that the hiding feature, the main point of the game, was more open-ended. Nonetheless, these shortfalls do not compromise the game's central motif. There are few things scarier than pushing around in the dark, looking through a grainy camcorder, in a fantastically freakish haunted asylum. The textures and atmosphere are so good; it's clear how much effort the team put into creating a compelling mood and immersive sound selection. The mnusic is chilling, the voice acting is strong, and this game will have you sweaing bullets. Play it in the dark, play it with headphones, and most of all, don't read walkthroughs. Just let the game's surprises come to you. Visually arresting, Outlast is definitely an essential addition to the great titles of PC horror lore.

A Heart-Pounding Horror Masterpiece!

"Outlast" is an exceptional horror game that left me with an unforgettable experience of fear and adrenaline. As a fan of the genre, I can confidently say that this game truly delivers on its promise of terror. The gameplay mechanics are simple yet incredibly effective. Armed with only a camcorder to capture evidence, I found myself navigating through the dark and sinister halls of Mount Massive Asylum. The emphasis on stealth and survival adds a sense of vulnerability, heightening the fear of being discovered by the twisted inhabitants. The atmosphere and graphics are top-notch, creating an incredibly immersive and eerie environment. The asylum is hauntingly realistic, and the clever use of lighting and sound design intensifies the dread throughout the entire journey. The story is gripping, unveiling a dark conspiracy that kept me engaged from beginning to end. The sense of mystery and suspense drove me forward, while the well-developed characters and shocking revelations added depth to the overall narrative. The game's scares are relentless, and the jump scares are expertly executed. "Outlast" expertly plays with psychological horror, instilling a feeling of dread and anticipation that stays with you even after the game is over. However, be warned that "Outlast" is not for the faint of heart. The intense horror elements and disturbing content may be overwhelming for some players, so it's not recommended for those easily frightened. In conclusion, "Outlast" is a horror masterpiece. Its captivating gameplay, chilling atmosphere, and engrossing story make it a must-play for horror enthusiasts seeking a genuinely terrifying experience. Brace yourself for a heart-pounding journey into the depths of terror that will stay with you long after the lights are out!

Tense horror walking sim

Outlast is a horror game, more sci-fi than supernatural because the enemies are failed experiments, not ghosts or demons. While obviously scary, it relies on creating a tense atmosphere and not too many jumpscares, but there are those thrilling chase scenes. You play as journalist Miles Upshur trying to uncover suspicious government activities in a dark abandoned asylum. In my experience, it seems Outlast is the one of the most popular horror walking sims (the ones where you cannot fight back) or even just horror games in general. If you're a fan of the genre or these kind of games, you should definitely give it a try.
