Description

Of Ash and Steel is an immersive third-person open-world RPG created by a passionate team that values the essence of classic old-school RPGs and modern designs. Explore the lands of a once-prosperous island, hone your combat skills, and survive in the unforgiving realm of the Kingdom of the Seven.

Features

  • 45 hours of main story, packed with dialogue, well-developed characters, books, and side quests.
  • Two major factions to choose from — each with its own unique storyline, quests, and exclusive rewards.
  • Combat system features three distinct battle stances, multiple weapon types, and active skills.
  • A vibrant, open-world island with diverse biomes to explore.
  • A wide range of professions to master, including fishing, hunting, blacksmithing (with the ability to craft your own one-of-a-kind sword), alchemy, and more.

Master the art of combat

Of Ash and Steel offers a challenging yet rewarding combat system. You are not a legendary bounty hunter or monster slayer by default. Instead, you must master the mechanics: manage stamina, time your attacks and parries, and determine which combat stances and weapon types suit you best. It takes time and practice, but the more you play, the more both you and Tristan evolve and gain an understanding of what is happening around you.

Learn to stand up for yourself using different weapons, environments, and active skills. Tailor your fighting style to suit you, from the agile rapier wielder to a heavy armour-clad knight, or create something unique!

Shape the fate of the world

Immerse yourself in a story full of twists, humor, and discoveries. Step into the shoes of a man who is destined to become much more than just a cartographer. Gain strength, survive, and forge alliances. Prove that even someone who has lost everything can become a significant force that can shape the fate of the whole world. Talk to locals to learn about their daily lives, and help them with tasks. Watch how people’s opinions of you change as your character grows. Join one of the two major factions and complete its unique storyline to earn exclusive rewards. Your actions and choices will also affect the world and the characters around you.

Explore like you used to

Of Ash and Steel has no marker system, and quests won't lead you by the hand. Rediscover the joy of exploration and let curiosity be your guide; the world promises rich rewards for those who dare to uncover its secrets.

Listen carefully to what people tell you and pay attention to what is said in the quests to find your way. Read books and notes to learn more about the world. Mark interesting locations on your map, explore the island, and uncover hidden treasures!

Feels like the old Gothic Game

This game needs some work for polishing as there is a lot to to. Especially battles feel clunky and not really smooth. Also climbing, i fell of a lot of edges without knowig why. But the game itself is quit nice.

Simply a well stitched RPG

This game does not need comparing to other games, simply because it is a good title on its own. We played Gothic, Risen back in the day. This game is similar in terms of world build, movement animations, textures, the possibility to play your way and often having to work for it. Every enemy killed feels like makes you a better fighter. A lot of loot discovered makes you feel like a better explorer. Sense of progress is good. And the sometimes cheesy looking workarounds to various problems remind a lot of the good old RPGs. Things I would like to be better, are lockpicking and Ranta. Lockpicking tutorial feels misleading, as you can't hear anything distinctive and sometimes I had to push pins like 2 times in one direction, 1 time in another at the same spot. Once lockpick breaks, the entire lock scheme changes. Simple solution: make so that pin placements remain the same until you actually exit lockpicking minigame. That way you may remember the sequence after lockpick breaks and continue. Now you just basically smash buttons and hope for the best. Ranta... I hit for 10 or 25 if lucky, get hit for 50 or 75 and lose in basically 2-3 rounds way too often. Don't know the solution, but some adjustments should be made to give players more room for mistakes, which happen all the time. Game is oriented at discovering things for yourself rather then pinpointing your every action in advance. Sometimes I feel the same way I felt while playing Skyrim. Based on the size on Developer, the game deserves respect. And hope it turns out to be successful enough for us to see a sequel in the future.

Frustrating Game which could be good.

At the moment the game is broken too many quests have objects that just vanish making you unable to finish the quest to make matters worse some quests require certain skills to complete but it doesn't tell you so you waste your time on it. Also the description of quests is so vague that you don't know where to go or even start to complete them. This is not like morrowind where it gave you directions of where to go which area you are looking for the person or item. Which is a real shame as for the exploration part its fantastic as you explore old ruins and cave. You character gradually gets better. But it is all brought down by the bugs and frustrating quest design. Wait a few months for them to sort out the bugs.

We have Gothic at home

As far as I know the game was heavily inpsired by Gothic and other older games. You can clearly see the ambition and love that went into the game. Which basically means I am willing to forgive a lot of the games faults. One annoyance I have is the lack of map (I assume you get it in Act 2) But many of those outschool games had a map early on and Gothic for example was a lot smaller you could also ask NPCs more for help. Here many quests feel like a stumbling around for the random NPC that might have a clue. In Gothic there were also NPCs to help you navigate and survive, here I have found one so far, that helped me reach the city. While the world building is excellent, Such NPCs would really help. I guess I focus too much on the negative. I think the game could be great if the devs path a few things. Maybe give the map earlier when you reach the city. Remove some bugs and QA . I really looked forward to the game I am still invested, I am also looking forward to see more from the devs and hope this game is fincancially viable. I think its easier to forgive the faults in a labor of love form a small team . Edit << As I suspected this is the first project from this team, so I think maybe its okay to cut them some slack. They also did't go for a full price. My decision was buy now, play a bit and wait for some patches to fix stuff. I wouldn't be so forgiving for AAA studio. But its a small team and I am sucker for Gothic-type games Pros An interesting setting The world is beautiful I like the combat system Cons The faces are a bit outdated I think no questmarkers is not just a challenge for the player to pay attention, but also the developer must design the dialog well enough to provide enough contextual clues. Which isn't always the case here. Very often you would thing a random npc should able to give you a clue, but instead you have to find the correct NPC, which might send you on another goose chase. Bugs
