A very good Gothic/ Risen alternative.
Yes, it could use some improvements here and there, but i am having lots of fun with it so far, although i am not very deep into the game yet, so i may change my review later. + Has a Gothic/ Risen vibe. The soundtrack, some enemies, conversation style and world building seem to be heavily inspired by those games. + Interesting and neat looking maps. The graphics may be a bit dated, but i do like it "oldschool", so no complaints there - only the faces could really be better. + Good voice actors. - Some small bugs here and there, including some jumpy camera work and cutscenes. - Most animals do drop items like bottles, frying pans and whatnot... - Quite a couple of "placeholder" npcs, that are just repeating the same stuff. - The npc faces are not exactly a joy to look at. - It takes ages to level up by fighting mobs only. - Could have some better sound mixing. - Some places look similar to others. - Boring starting area at the beach. The first fights can be a little hard, but don't let yourself get demotivated by it. Once you are getting the hang of it, they will be easier to handle after only a short while. Using a combi of bow/ melee is a good thing to do. I am only a few hours into the game. If i find more to report, i'll update my review/ rating. But for now i will recommend it, especially to most Piranha Bytes fans. Edit1: I am a few hours more into the game now and i like the world building very much. Again, very Gothic like. I have read that some are complaining about it being too hard and because it has some bugs at the time of writing. The game is getting patches regularly to fix these bugs, which you can also report in the Dev's Discord. The difficulty and combat mechanics can be a bit frustrating at first, but melee combat is definitively better than in Gothic 3 and it's only really difficult, if you enter pathways and territories that are not meant to be explored by you yet. If you stay on the "main path", most enemies are easy to handle. Just come back to the other areas later, once you are strong enough. Edit2: I am a bit lost atm, i have travelled quite far, i have found no map anywhere, so i do not exactly know where i am and leveling up the char by fighting only takes hours, even if i do kill the stronger regular mobs. I may have to find and do more quests. Still a bit demotivating. Thats why i will reduce the rating to 4 out of 5.
