Abe is a first class Mudokon floor-waxer for RuptureFarms. He was catapulted into a life of adventure when he overheard plans by his boss to turn all the Mudokons into Tasty Treats as part of a last-ditch in Molluck the Glukkon's meat-packing empire.
During his escape from RuptureFarms, Abe received a vision from the mysterious Big Face, showing Abe that he must not only rescue his fellow Mudokons, but also protect all of Oddworld's creatures from the predatory Magog Cartel.
Enter Oddworld's surreal sensory overload of pure gaming and claim your destiny. Saviour or salami? You decide.
Back in the day, I loved the game. It really can't be even put into a genre. This platforming-stealth-action-shooter-puzzle game is really a must buy. A worthy game to put your moolah in.
I have to say...I have known about the game from back in the 1990's but never really cared about gaming then as that is sorta before I became a teen...
I decided tho recently from looking at screens and from past time rumors of the game series and what not to get the game from here and give it a shot...Now I have only played a very little of it but I can definitely say that the game is a very very good 1...the artwork and level design is just amazing...The artwork alone is nice because it all blends as 1 as if it were ment to be...
Now sum controls are a little misconfigured to what the ingame content says...well just the chant controls(instead of pressing and holding shift+alt you press 0 instead...)...but besides that everything is very nice...
I feel that the cinematic scenes add a lil positive feeling to the gameplay as well they help to better understand what is going on within the game and are not too choppy looking to throw you off on what is happening in them...
I rate this game 5/5 stars for the fact gameplay is pretty smooth, graphics are top notch for the time period the game was release in...and the story is just amazing...the story is 1 of those that you can find rarely to be so good...
GET THIS GAME!
I first played this on the PS1 back when it came out, in fact it was the first game I got with my Playstation. I'll state off the bat that I prefer to use a controller with this game, although the computer keyboard isn't so bad that I couldn't get used to it. In fact, it may not be a problem at all if the PC is the first platform you play this on. Anyway!
Abe's Oddysee is full of humor, weird creatures, evil corporate alien bosses, landmines, chanting... if you're a fan of the Another World/Flashback/Prince of Persia style game experience, you can't go wrong here. The puzzles always verge on being frustratingly difficult, but they never cross that line. The solutions always make sense, and you'll have that A-ha! moment as long as you stick with them.
Sometimes it can be tough to get the timing of running jumps or rolls just right, and it WILL cause you to die and restart. In a way, that's just par for the course for these types of games; a lot of your experience is based on trial and error. I can't think of any area where the restart point was too far back.
Definitely try it if you're interested in puzzle games or platformers. The world, the creatures and characters, the experience of the story, the sense of reward in figuring things out, it's all worth it! Kind of a hidden gem, unfortunately. Many people know the game or the characters but I don't hear it mentioned often.
Okay, this game one milestone in videogames! Though it uses recepies that had been there for a while - what I mean is the "trial and error - jump'n'puzzle" game, but adding a unique world with fascinating creatures and new gameplay elements like communication.
The puzzles take some time to solve - and the game requires you to have good timing skills to perform the actions.
Abe's Oddysee can get frustrating as you need to try some running and jumping parts over and over again to get to the goal. But it is also quite fun to get the "aha!" idea how to solve puzzles.
In overall a very good game and the prerendered 2D graphics look good even today. The ambient soundtrack is a plus to the atmosphere of Oddworld.
I've found it's the best platform game as the rules are obvious. Unlike human role playing when I'm unsure what the carrictors limits are. As this charrictor is off the planet, he's fun to get to know and grow with.
