Great great Game

The first Thing to have Fun with this Game, is to know at least something about Pen and Paper Games as Dungeons and Dragons, because you will fail miserably if not (as i did with my first Character). The second Thing is, take a Companion that covers the Weaknesses you have. You have a Mage or Ranger? Take a Companion that can tank and hit Enemies hard. Have a Warrior? Take a Thief or Mage with you. Graphicwise the Game is a Child of its Age, but it does look better than other older 3D Games and you can load in HD Stuff or make a 2D Comic like Effect with the newest Patch. I personally like the original Graphics, they have a nice Composition. Soundwise the english Version is far better than the german and i would recommend that one. Not only the Voice over, but also the overall Mix, it is just very very off in the german. The Game itself focuses much more on Quests in Dungeons and Combat than Baldur's Gate, but not as far as Icewind Dale. You do backtrack, identify Items, Manage your Ressources and talk to People, but you aren't really exploring Cities that much. I played through the original Campaign and the first Expansion so far and the Game delivers pretty good Stories, a lot of different Monsters and a Variety of Environments. Was surprised that there are even Connections to Baldur's Gate 3. I was also very surprised by some of the Mechanics, you can't picklock a Door or Chest? Destory it! Not as insanely deep as Stuff in BG3, but it allows you to overcome Situations in different Ways. I can't understand the bad Reviews, Neverwinter Nights has a nice Atmosphere, good gameplay Mechanics and has A LOT of Modules to play several houndred of Hours. There is many Fan Stuff out there that can extend the Game even further. The Diamond and Enhanced Edition also work very much better than the original Release. I played the most on the Enhanced, coming from the original.

Linux Woes

The game is 5/5 I have no doubt, I purchased NWN:EE during the winter sale for a bargain price. I still own the original big-box version of NWN & have probably played, and completed, it more than any other game throughout my entire 25+ year gaming life. What swayed me to buy this version was native Linux support, which is where I spend most of my time these days. And while I do have a Windows install (well, several) would prefer not to have to switch OS's just to play a game. Unfortunately, it doesn't work natively on Linux at all, at least not my distro (Mint 19.1). Installation went fine but the game wouldn't launch. Running from terminal I was greeted with a missing library error, which I fixed and got the game to load only to be greeted with flickering video, poorly resized UI, vertically offset mouse pointer recondition and NO SOUND. So if, like me, you are buying this because of the native Linux version? Beware, your mileage may vary and sometimes the road may completely disappear.

Game closes all the time

My experience with the game has not been good due to it closing all the time. In character creation, when I try to change clothes to choose the one, it stop and closes. This also occurs when I choose some pre-created characters. During the game, it stop and closes, so I haven't left the tutorial yet.

Great for Linux users

I've bought this game a long time ago on physical media. The bundle includes Platinum Edition + all the premium and some community modules. I loved the game ever since. The game also runs natively on Linux, so when I started using it instead of Windows, I was still able to install and play the game perfectly on any of the computers I've used. However, for reasons unknown to me, after a few years the cut scene videos stopped working on Linux, and I couldn't find a way to make that segment work again any more, although the game itself was still running normally. At some point this Enhanced Edition (EE) was offered on a strong discount, and I decided to give it a shot. I was impressed to see that this edition improves the Linux experience on two main fronts: the installation process is much easier now, and the cutscene videos are working again! For me, this is good enough to make me happy about the purchase. Also, the UI in this edition is usable with modern resolutions too, which helps a lot. There are also some graphic filter improvements etc., but to me the three I've mentioned are the most important ones. The game is also still playable on old hardware. Not as old as the original does, but for those very old machines you also get the original Diamond Edition bundled with the EE. So you're pretty much covered. The only downside is that the Aurora toolset is still not working on Linux, but I wasn't using it much even back in my Windows days many years ago, so this is not a big issue for me, but it certainly is for those who wish to create modules on their Linux machines. The game itself is great, and the EE makes it better suited for modern machines and OS's. And if you find it on discount, to top it all, it is certainly a good deal.
