A Gaming Massacre

Neverwinter Nights: Diamond Edition is and always will be one of my favorite D&D-based co-op experiences, and at $9.99, it was easy to convince new friends to pick it up [especially when it went on sale for $2.49, or even $1.99!]- but now that the separate Diamond edition has been erased from GOG [a game which had more content than this "Enhanced" edition] It's a tough sell. Beamdog and GOG have effectively made it harder for me to play one of my favorite games with friends, and that makes me really disappointed. The Enhanced edition is a cashgrab- nothing else. Nothing that is found in this version cannot be found elsewhere. It was not rebuilt from the ground up, it was not improved, even a lot of the bugs that were fixed were fixed using the roots of COMMUNITY patches [to say NOTHING of the bugs that still exist in the game!!]. We were teased with "Enhanced character models/ higher resolution textures and a myriad of other features" but at its core, this is a pathetic cashgrab from a parasitic company, and I'm ashamed that GOG would hide the epitome of D&D 3rd edition CRPG behind the terrible paywall that is "NWN:EE". The only thing being enhanced with this game is Beamdog's Wallets. How Pathetic.

Cheaper classic removed

Unfortunately can't recommend this product. First, gog removed cheaper original which is identical to enhanced edition, more than doubling the price. Secondly, most persistent world servers stayed away from the scam enhanced edition and hence most of us have stayed on original. If new players want to join they have now pay far more and make it even more unlikely for new players to come to servers for this older game. The game itself if 5/5 but I'm reviewing the full product for sale here.

NWN has never been better

NWN is one of my favorite multiplayer PC RPGs of all time due to its versatility, SDK and multiplayer focus. I'm going to gush a little bit here, but the care and attention poured into this EE--even years after release--is impressive. I've now put in dozens of hours playing various modules in multiplayer and single player modes, and the experience has been smooth and stable. In particular, I've been impressed with: - a steady stream of patches and upgrades - many graphical enhancements to lighting, water effects, shadows, etc. (I had all the fancy DX9 effects enabled at launch, and it looks even better now) - native support for super ultrawide resolutions - I'm playing at 32:9 with no issues - improved netcode - vastly expanded SDK - a wealth of settings and options I was able to tweak to my exact liking - mod compatibility seems to include all the greatest hits Not sure what work has been done with the audio, but the Jeremy Soule soundtrack sounds as great as ever, and there is an immersive stereo "3D" effect over speakers and headphones. The fact they are still releasing patches, bugfixes, enhancements and new features is noteworthy, and makes this edition feel like a true labor of love. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for all fans of the original release.

"Enhanced" is a stretch...

Right, so, yes this version has resolutions up to 4K, UI scaling, and more display enhancement options, but that sounds better on paper than it does in actual practice. Let's start with the scaling, which is a simple stretching of the UI, so components are blurrier and lower in quality. Inventory items are the same way. None of the original textures have been replaced with new, higher resolution textures, so the whole feel of the game has changed for the worse, think Duke Nukem 3D or Morrowind/Oblivion with third party enhancements but without their high res packs, it just doesn't look right. Then there's the display enhancements. Again, since the game doesn't include new textures, it doesn't look quite right. The wall tops in Hordes Of The Underdark, for example, look like a big banana pudding like blob. My advice is if you already own NWN Diamond Edition, stick with it, this version doesn't offer anything, at the time of this review, compelling to spend more money for the same game over again. If you DON'T already own it, however, go ahead and buy this version as GoG includes the original as well.

Don't let the nay sayers fool you

First of all, if you already own the Diamond Edition and you don't feel like getting this version as well is worth it... then don't. But if you don't own NVN, this is the version to get. And no, you're not paying for a campaign mod. You're paying for a remastered version that comes with all the OG expansions, it includes the OG Diamond Edition as well, plus compatibilty with plenty of mods. Yes, the graphics are dated, but who cares about graphics in a game that's nearly a quarter of a century old? The important thing is that it runs out of the box at modern resolutions with proper UI scaling. No fiddling around to get it running at 4K. Besides, you're not supposed to play this sort of game zoomed in, like some sort of third person RPG. It continues in the tradition of 'isometric' CRPGs. The game is perfectly readable. If in doubt, the action log that tells you exactly what's going on. You can press tab to see interactable items. You have multiple camera options, it's not fixed as the person below says. The game teaches you about it in the early tutorial section. I've had a lot of fun with the OG campaing and it can serve as an excellent introduction into DnD based RPGs because it eases you into it. Yes, you directly control only your character (tho you can have a henchman, summoned creatures, pets), but if you're just learning the ropes having only one character to deal with is actually a plus. Having to deal with a whole party of different races and classes can be intimidating for a beginner. Being an older game, there's a wealth of information out there about builds and such. Shadows of Undrentide and especially Hordes of the Underdark are fantastic. The companion AI isn't great, but you do have some control over their behaviour. Plus with a bit of planning you can easily solo the game. For the amount of content you get, plus access to all the community modules, you can't argue with the price. It's literally hundreds of hours of fun once you get into it.
