It seems like a lot of people passed up this one; the first Neverwinter Nights had a lot of potential, but was a game for people who like mods and module building. This game has all that flexibility, plus three of the best D&D campaigns that have ever been adapted to PC. The original campaign is equal parts lighthearted parody of classic D&D cliché and clever subversion of the tropes of the standard campaign; it's full of little jokes for people who know the system, but it's also a rich and fun story for anyone who doesn't. Storm of Zehir is the closest thing I've ever encountered to actually playing pen and paper D&D - it's a genuine campaign, full of asinine player choice, freedom and scope. Both are excellent D&D campaigns. Mask of the Betrayer is basically the harrowing dreamlike lovechild of Baldur's Gate II and Planescape: Torment. And it's an Epic campaign, so is suitably ridiculous to boot.

I have been playing this game for a few years now and I am NOT getting bored of it. It suffers a bit in the technical department (some bugs, glitches and unfinished content) but makes it up fivefold with it's other features: -If you like Dragon Age: Origins' party gameplay, you get a very similar experience here. -You get a ton of races, classes, prestige classes, skills and spells here. You can make any combination you can imagine almost. Dwarf Battlemage Necromancer? Possible. -The first expansion, Mask of the Betrayer, takes you into epic levels, with a really deep and dark storyline and characters. -The second expansion, Storm of Zehir, goes the opposite way. It allows you to make your own characters and full party, focusing on exploration in a jungle, as well as letting you be a merchant, with your own base of operations that you upgrade. -You get a powerful toolset. It might be complex but allows for great customization to make your own adventures and campaigns. -You can play online. Even though they pulled the plug officially, online functionality has been restored with Skywing's Client Extension. And online here, doesn't mean deathmatches or grinding with a friend. You can play on custom roleplaying servers that have their own rules, settings and quests, totally different from another. Neverwinter Nights 2 is not perfect but it's a great game with a huge replayability.

Original stories in the campaigns, many hours of play, choices that matter, runs beautifully on any modern pc or notebook, not any game-breaking bugs, multiplayer, mod support, memorable companions, what else to ask for in this genre of gaming 10 years ago? Stands pretty well even today.

It's neem downhill for RPGs since this one.

This game simply does not function. The UI frequently breaks down and becomes unresponsive. The companion AI is atrociously designed. The game needlessly features three separate control modes and all of them possess the same dodgy imprecise movement and obtuse camera. The game lacks basic user options that might have done something to make the camera and controls somewhat workable. Bugs and glitches abound. The combat is pathetically simple. 90% of this game's challenge is in fussing with the obtuse camera, babysitting your obstinate and suicidal companions, and reloading or restarting when glitches occur or parts of the UI stop responding. The only good thing I can say about NWN2 is that the companions were somewhat entertaining. Sad, the NPCs deserve better than this inexcusable broken mess of a product. BUYER BEWARE!!
