All GOG needs now is UMK3 and they got the whole classic MK collection. They should still port over UMK3 because they're is some difference between UMK3 and Trilogy
Yes this is the second updated version of MK3. I'm not going to sugar coat the difficulty being rough at times. But man this version blew my mind as a kid on PlayStation 1 back in the day. A better all-stars MK game than Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. Someone had to said it, MKT is one of the best fighting games GOG has to offer hands down.
Mortal Kombat Trilogy is often lauded as one of the best game in the series. While not the last in the 2D era, it's the last that utilizes 2D graphics and it has every character from the first MK game from 1992 up to UMK3. Bosses are now playable and also includes all the stages from from MK2 (1993) to UMK3, with a few stages from the first MK game.
The most popular way to play MKT was on the PlayStation 1, however one of the biggest criticisms of that version was the load times, which made some characters obnoxious to play, like Shang Tsung, of which the game loads whenever he transforms into another character. There's next-to-no load times in this GOG version of the game. Shang Tsung can now transform into any character on a dime. The only issue I ran into while playing this port, is that the graphics are a bit glitchy when playing in windowed mode. It doesn't ruin the game, but it is a bit distracting.
The biggest bonus of this GOG version is that it has Xinput right out of the box, so you can use most controllers and play the game with little hassle.
Putting aside the technicalities of the port itself, the game itself is the definitive 2D MK installment... On a casual level. For those into comp play, most of the balance changes feel like band-aid solutions and even ignoring the bosses, there are some pretty broken chars like Noob Saibot and Rain. Frame rate might be off for some enthusiasts, though that can be fixed with a patch, and the graphics aren't arcade perfect, the char sprite are smaller than those seen in their arcade counterparts. However, MKT can be seen as a fun novelty for comp players, but it will be perfect for those who want more of a casual romp.
...And was surprised to how well it works:
✔ Was able to get both my arcade stick and hitbox working with it in no time, since it conveniently comes packed with a input configuration tool.
✔ You can easily turn off AA and enable integer scaling to get that sharp pixel look through the DirectX configuration tool.
✔ Game does not have scanline filters (as expected). However, since it uses a DirectX wrapper, you can just add your favorite one through reshade if you so wish.
Overall, really solid release. Will be using this moving forward instead of emulating the PSX version (which is really the highest sort of praise you can give to these things).
