Metroidvania, Dark Souls and Kirby

Momodora Under The Moonlight, a really good Metroidvania style of game, it takes some elements from Dark Souls like the grim atmosphere, chararcters and even some decisions you can make throught the game. It isn't a long game though, my first playthrought took about 4 hours to beat. As someone who doesn't like the genre too much, for example i find Hollow Knight very tyring after and hour or so, I liked this game and the diferent locations the team presented, the music is also charming, really calm tunes that helps you exploring the a much more enjoyable experience. The map isn't that big though, i'd say is fairly short but very well crafted one with lots of secrets and a unlock percent wich helps with orientation. There are lots of unlockables too. The Kirby and Dark Souls elements as i say in the title are mostly presented in the combat and story, a grim atmosthere mixed with cutie enemies you can beat with your sword or leaf as is presented in the game. Item descriptions, Inicivility Frames, Characters and lots more. The Combat in this game is really good, you have a short-range (sword) and a long-range one (bow) both help a lot, if you have the precition you could try using the bow from the distance or go full straight with the sword, the enemies can get stunlocked like in the soul series. but this seems to be more reminencent to a Kirby game stunlock wich gives more time to think what the next attack could be and the enemy being freeze for a short period of time before it activates again. The main character hitbox is also really big compared to the short enemies to the game sometimes presents wich can be a problem if you want to try a hitless run. In conclusion, it's worth your money and time? Yes, yes it is. You can beat this game lots of times and don't get bored from it, trying to beat the game as fast as possible is a challenge to try.

Small indie gem.

Among metroidvanias/soulsvanias, Momodora is not the most challenging, nor the longest, nor the most innovative one. It stands out because it's very polished and it's full of details that show that a lot of care has been put in it. Momodora creates a very good atmosphere, with an underlying tone of nostalgia, suffering, melancholy and loss. Character designs are pretty and imaginative, gameplay is agile, animations are fluid, pixellated girls are pretty, comic reliefs aren't annoying and they even manage to make you smile, and music is excellent. We're Kaho, a forest priestess, sent to the corrupt capital to stop the power tainting the land and its inhabitants. We follow a vow of silence, and we are equipped with a bow, and an enchanted maple leaf we wield as a sword. The "Reverie Under the Moonlight" subtitle tries to hide that this should have been Momodora 4. Momodora 1 to 3 are simple games where the designer gained experience and polished his formula. Kaho is a character alluded to in previous game, which makes this game a prequel. "Reverie Under the Moonlight" sure looks like the Magnum Opus of its creator. Mechanically, it's a light soulsvania with the same healing and saving mechanics (bonfires and estus flasks, with different names and shapes). It can become difficult in certain places, but overall is an accesible game. Gamers should pick hard difficulty from the start. The game takes a while to let you have some freedom to explore, and feels more or less lineal. There's a bad ending and a less bad ending, depending if you picked one specific item or not. You'll love Momodora if you don't expect too much from it, or if you are able to appreciate the little details and care its creator put in it. It won't be your favorite game, but you won't forget about it easily. Oh, and there's a giant undead witch boss whose boobs are also her hitboxes. Ten out of ten.

Great looking immersive metroidvania

Really enjoyed playing through. The setting is immersive with good music and artwork befitting the story. The controls are simple but tight and feel really polished. Only critique might be that the plot left a lot to be wondered about. There are a lot of interesting characters and places that you *want* to find out the backstory but AFAIK they aren't explained in the game. I went to a wiki because they were very interesting settings and characters, but their stories weren't really made available to the player.

Some old stuff done very well

I liked it, I am content that I bought it and finished it. Will you like it? It is rather small and simple game. If you played already games from this genre you won't see anything new but you will see some old stuff done very well. I had some problem with running it but GOG Support manage to help me and I finished the game without any more troubles.

Short and sweet

If you're looking for a short game with beautiful pixel art and solid mechanics, give this one a try. I finished this game in 2 days of playing, and although it doesn't take very long, there is more than enough content to keep you entertained. The music and graphics are amazing, and build a really good atmosphere; the characters and the world and well developed and quite engaging, even with so little dialogue. The world feels alive, and so do its inhabitants. The gameplay is solid. Combat is fast, and a bit challenging, but not frustrating; Exploration feels very rewarding, after aqcuring the necessary power-ups of course; and the itens, while not many, do allow for some interesting strategies. Everything the game tries to do, it does really well. Also, and perhaps most importantly, the developer is brazilian. BRASIL CARALHOOOOO CAMPEÃO DO MUNDOOOOOOOOOO🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷 Linux compatibility (for me): flawless, had zero issues with this game.
