Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight

A lovely sidescrolling Action-Adventure that takes some time to get into. It's a short game, but it does have a brief warm-up period. When I first started playing, I felt that it was too hard, but I quickly found myself getting acclimated to it, and once I did, I couldn't put the thing down, playing until 3am one night, when I had to be up in 3 hours for work. It features a lot of modern conveniences, like fast travel, a map with completion percentage, and items that regenerate when you hit a save point. The visuals are lovely, and the music does a great job of creating atmosphere, whether it be macabre, relaxing, or wrapped in the breathtaking beauty of nature. It's surprisingly dark in quite a few areas, reminding me of a combination of Symphony of the Night and the first Cotton game, especially considering how cute the main character is. The actual gameplay is surprisingly solid, considering that you will find very few upgrades for this type of game. I don't know if it's because of the short length, but the basic gameplay remains engaging throughout the entire adventure. If the gameplay has a weak spot, I'd say that it's many of the bosses. They do telegraph some of their moves, but a frustrating few don't telegraph all of them, so you get used to these tells, only for them to vanish. The other problem with the tells is that they don't tell you which move is coming, so sometimes, you'll dodge the wrong way. Still, the dodge mechanic is neat, and something I'd like to see more of in games like this. If you're into the genre, this is definitely worth checking out, especially at such a reasonable price. As a metroidvania title, I really enjoyed this game. It's atmospheric, the controls feel nice and snappy. Combat is simple but satisfying. I don't really have any complaints, just noticed some small ways the game could be better... -The game lacks ambient noise. Not a big deal, but would contribute to the atmosphere. -Music sounds very midi-ish. It's understated and ambient, but the low quality sound was constantly noticable, the music itself is nice though. While the game is retro in a lot of ways, i would have enjoyed sampled instruments and modern synths. -Lack of items/weapons/abilities. It just felt limited in that regard. -Limited abilities in general. You can only have a small number of passives and active items. Wish they could have found some other way of handling that. -Lack of lore text... I feel like the game could have gone all out with lore, just finding random bits of text and items that delve a bit more into the world than is currently avaliable. Characters talk to you and wander around the map, but it feels like more of this would have added a ton of intrigue. I really enjoyed the game and would recommend it to fans of the genre, technically though, it could be more robust.

In my opinion, is a very good metroidvania, although it has a mistake. The dev hasn't added any achivement...

I'm generally horrible at platformers and things that require precision and some reviews kinda scared me off, but I didn't find this game that hard. Sure, enemies hit pretty hard, so you'll die often and have to reapeat some screens, but to me it wasn't enough to make the game annoying to me. I generally play these kind of games as an uphill battle in short sessions. It took me around 9 hours to get to the end (with 100% exploration of the map, because I wanted to see it all and I'm not replaying it anythime soon!). All in all, it was a lovely short story, challenging enough to be fun and very pretty to look at. I'm glad with my purchase.
