Once this city used to pulse with energy - dirty and dangerous - but alive and wonderful. Now it is something else.
In a city where information is heavily monitored, agile couriers called Runners transport sensitive data away from prying eyes.
In this seemingly utopian paradise, a crime has been committed, your sister has been framed and now you are being hunted.
You are a Runner called Faith - and this innovative first-person action-adventure is your story.
Mirror’s Edge™ delivers you straight into the shoes of this unique heroine as she traverses the vertigo-inducing cityscape, engaging in intense combat and fast paced chases. With a never before seen sense of movement and perspective, you will be drawn into Faith’s world. A world that is visceral, immediate, and very dangerous.
Live or die? Soar or plummet? One thing is certain, in this city you will learn how to run.
Move yourself: String together an amazing arsenal of wall-runs, leaps, vaults and more, in fluid, acrobatic movements that turns every level of the urban environment to your advantage and salvation.
Immerse yourself: In first person every breath, every collision, every impact is acutely felt. Heights create real vertigo, movements flow naturally, collisions and bullet impacts create genuine fear and adrenaline.
Challenge yourself: Fight or flight. Your speed and agility allow you not only to evade, capture and perform daring escapes, but also to disable and disarm unwary opponents, in a mix of chase, puzzles, strategy and intense combat.
Free Yourself: Runner vision allows you to see the city as they do. See the flow. Rooftops become pathways and conduits, opportunities and escape routes. The flow is what keeps you running – what keeps you alive.
Parkour is super smooth. The game motivates you to want to replay levels to clear them faster and in a cooler way. The soundtrack is super cool to and fits the futuristic atmosphere so well. :)
It definitely shows it's age! There's not the same polish and attention to detail that modern games have but it's not necessarily bad. Just a little rough. Some levels are poorly designed, voice acting is sub-par and some animations should have been tweeked a little. All in all, if it's on sale I don't think you'll regret buying it, but it definitely feels like an old game.
PROS: Unique concept, Surprisingly well working movement controls, Interesting art style, Beautiful soundtrack (really sets the mood!), Nice funny easter eggs (some of the screens in elevators are hillarious). * CONS: The main game is rather short (on the plus side, there are Time Trial Races + Speedrun Challenges, which are fun to play and can expand the gameplay time a lot, not to mention the game itself is probably worth replaying at least once), The storytelling isn't very good (for me, it failed to explain/justify why are the Runners wanted so much by the government and the plot twists felt somehow cheap/cliche, plus it also failed to deliver a real sense of dystopian future - I would expect cops/army regularly patrolling the streets and posters/screens spreading propaganda everywhere - but you don't really get to see much of that), Some parts become a little frustrating after dying a couple of times in the same spot and trying to get through over and over again (at least the checkpoints are quite frequent, so you usually don't need to replay a long segment to get where you were) * OVERAL: Despite the fact that I listed more cons than pros, I really enjoyed playing this game and probably will play it again. (I lost patience in some of the combats and just shoot down all the enemies - but I want to try a "clean" run - without killing anybody - as well, probably in a hard mode which unlocked after completing the game, to make things little more interesting... :) ) I really liked its atmoshpere and some parts really make you feel like like you're an action hero in a movie. Just don't expect it to be a movie with great story and you won't be disappointed ;)
Mirror's Edge came in a time when we had lots of shooters and copycat games. Something fresh, fun and attractive. The idea of first-person parkour sounds crazy but it feels amazing and you'll squirm everytime you fail to jump between buildings.
After all this years is still a pretty looking game, thanks to an amazing art direction. Top this with Solar Fields music and you'll have the best adrenaline rush in a game ever.
It only falls short on narrative & combat aspects. Very light story (you against some evil corp) and character development that's just out there and combat is not even encouraged since it breaks the momentum.
But this is one of those brilliant sparks that you need to try sometime. It's a relative short game so it will take you around 7 to 8 hours.
Now, the sequel is better at narrative, scale and tech level but has it's own quirks for being too ambitious. Being a Origin-only game doesn't help either. It's very cheap now but I would still recomend going with the original first.
Mirror's edge has a beautiful bright, clean and colorful graphic style. Standing on top of a skyscraper and jumping to other obstacles and buildings is unfortunately totally unrealistic, but pure gaming fun.
The futuristical synthie soundtrack is brilliant comparable to the amazing graphics.
Technically I had to choose a much lower resolution, because the ventilators of my pc always went load even on 1280 x 768 or so. I mean the game is from 2009 and I bought a powerful pc much later?!!
The game has a lot of frustrating moments, often I had to repeat the same passages dozens of time. The boxing match with an assassin and gun fights were extremely tough and time consuming. Unfortunately you can't save when you want and a few times the savepoints were set very unfair. The controls work fine after absolving a lot of training. The way through the missions can be indicated by pressing a special key and and important obstacles were colored in red.
In my point of view mirror's edge defined a new era of jump & run games in 3D and is an absolute must buy and play. One of the best games I ever played, I felt fully enthusiastic the whole playthrough.
