Nice game but a bit easy and a bit buggy

Ok, I bought this game because you can turn your characters into Liches. How cool is that? Back to the review. The MM series have a unique way of increasing your skills, where you first need to learn it and then with skill points (which you get every level) you increase your skill levels. Once getting into certain skill levels you can go to a master to become Expert, Master or even Grand Master at this skill. Your class dictates what skills you can train to what level, so you are forced to have a balanced party. MM9 gives two class promotions per character, so it gives you something to work towards to. In comparison to other MM games, MM9 "streamlined" the skills, so there is 1 skill for all elements (which used to be 4) and like one armor skill instead of one for plate, leather and chain. It feels rushed this way. This game is a Mac and Cheese kind of RPG. By that I mean that it is a lot of fun, but it does not give any challenge or satisfaction at the end, which comes way too fast. On top of that there are a few nasty bugs. I never played it back in the day and if you've read the other reviews, you can tell there used to be WAY more. The GOG version is patched to the latest version and only crashed three times for me. There was one bug that almost forced me to have to start the whole game over. Luckily by cheating (I used a save game editor) I could correct the bug. To save you the trouble there is a way to circumvent it. When you want to promote your character you have to solve a quest, but if you didn't tell the person who can promote you what characters should be promoted before solving the quest, noone can get that promotion anymore! So if you want a promotion, talk with the correct character and already select who needs to be promoted and then solve the quest. Any other order will cause you to want to pull your hair out! I do not think it is worth the price, it should be like $5 instead of $10, but if you just want a quick RPG game this is the game for you.

Should have been a great game

Lots of fun, but as others have said be prepared for the problems. You do *need* patches to make it work and even then you can expect regular crashes. For me it crashes about ever 5th change of location which towards the end of the game means a lot. The greatest frustration for me was almost at the end discovering that somehow the next quest wouldnt trigger and I was left with a random assortment of saves with no idea which might after hours of gameplay work or perhaps also not. Gave up with about 80 hours in. Sad.

does NOT work (easily) on Windows 10

I enjoyed this game, despite the flaws etc, you can read the other reviews for that, this one is on this game on windows 10, it is VERY hard to get this to work on Windows 10. I have not been successful in getting it to work since upgrading to 10. Which is upsetting, emailed GoG support, they too said this game is not supported on Windows 10 Just a warning, otherwise on sale, this game is pretty fun imo, rating would be higher if game still worked for me

Annoying bugs

Was excited to play but am now disappointed. No matter whatever fix I tried it still wouldn't work. I'd recommend not buying this game at all. If you can get this game working on your machine however I'd give it a 4 or 5 but nah.

Give it a Chance

MM9 is typically hated on for a lot of very good reasons. It's unfinished, it's buggy, the character models hit uncanny valley, and towns and overworlds oft feel devoid of substance, but there's a lot of charm to the game and I invite people to give it a shot. Firstly, the community patch fixes a lot of the more serious issues with the game crashing or quests not working. Still, the game has issues, even getting the game to run can sometimes be a hassle. Next, the class system and gameplay are great. Not perfect, but still great. I liked the branching promotions, although it often felt like the 2nd promotion was the only one that mattered. The story is a bit uneventful until the 2nd half and reminded me a little too much of 6's fetch quest extravaganza, except the quests you're sent on are actually interesting and unique. For instance, instead of just storming a jail and releasing a prisoner, you can choose to stealth in there, lie your way inside, or slash through everybody and everything. Which brings me to my favorite part of MM9: the dungeons. The dungeons for MM9 are by and far my favorite bit. For however much the cities feel like unfinished ghost towns, the dungeons prove the exact opposite. They all seemed very carefully crafted and each provide their own type of challenge.
