Something wrong with GoG version.

The game is awensome but there is something wrong with GoG version. Maybe we have better light effects of mobs and spells in this one, but old CD version have sharper textures of items on the ground, and what more important, differences between mobs of one kind in their colour scheme. The weakest one, with worst stats, had green colur pattern (for example triton), medicore had blue colour (triton warriors), and the best of the kind had red colour pattern (like triton crusaders). In the GoG version, mobs of one kind always have one color scheme (tritons - blue, pirtes - red, skeletons - red etc.) no matter if they are the strongest or the weakest mobs of their kind. It quite confusing, and destroys immersion of the game. Because of this disadvantages (and bugs like crashes everytime when you eneter the last location with sound on) I must give this version 3/5 rate.

Good entry into Might and Magic series.

This is a good entry in Enroth/Erathia/Jadame trilogy, though not as good as the first two (6 and 7). The game has a better graphics than 6 and 7, quite good story and good quests. You can play different races that are substitute for classes of the previous games (for example, Dark Elf is very close to the Archer class of M&M 7). You can even have dragons in your party. But on the negative side it has smaller world, smaller dungeons and it is much easier than previous entries. Once you get a dragon, the rest of the game is a easy. You also get a lot of experience for the quests leveling up quickly (bounty hunter guild quest gives you more than a million of the experience on the last level). There are too many relics and artifacts as well. There are bugs, but besides the crash entering Escaton palace (which you can avoid by lowering all sounds to 0 in control menu for the moment of entrance), nothing breaking the game. The game also removes SciFi settings, except for the last cut scene, so you will not be shooting blasters. The game works well on Linux with WINE, provided (as for any 32-bit game) you add 32-bit graphics drivers and log-in via X, not Wayland. Overall this is my least favorite out of M&M 6, 7 and 8, but it is still very good

My first Might and Magic - and the best!

I took time and really old notebook to find and play this awesome RPG game. I love Might and Magic universe, I love RPG and I did not know that there is connection like this! I really enjoyed whole game, game mechanism, world and story (even when the story sounds soooo familiar - what do you think Silver surfer?). I recommend to anybody who is familiar with Might and Magic universe and has a weakness for RPG and plenty of time.

Excellent if unchanged

If you liked and sixth and seventh installments in this series, you will like this one as well. It has many of the same faults and the same virtues. The main difference between it and the previous two titles is that you only create a single character: all other members of your party must be recruited. I actually liked this feature though I imagine some will see it as a minus.

An uneven experience

While M&M VIII is not considered the black sheep of the latter years of the series like IX is, it's certainly one of the games that truly shows its age. While some interesting features were added, most of them are a bit half-baked (racial classes) and generally don't make up for the lost of content, sense of free-roam exploration and cohesion that its two predecessors had. In my opinion of this engine-trilogy, M&M7 is the sweet spot. 6's enemy count is out of control, like some sort of stress test, while 8's spread is a bit meager outside of the unicorn forest. There's fewer areas than in the previous games, very little dichotomy or in the way of path choices, and very little in the way of new music or enemy sprites. The fifth character helps with the gear carrying, but it's mostly a crutch due to the poor skill spread and lack of multiple class-ups. I wouldn't recommend this one until after at least 6 and 7 are exhausted, and by then you'll probably have had enough retreating and firing bows for one lifetime. Mediocre features, story and content don't stop Day of the Destroyer from doing its job, but it's a half-assed job it does.
