Metro 2033 Redux

A beautiful game that combines a range of experiences. Some maps involve surviving waves of enemies, some maps are rail shooters, some maps are combat-free city explorations where you mingle with the locals and trade for needed resources. My favorite maps are the ones with human opponents, which allow you a wide range of playstyles. You can go with the stealth approach and sneak past them, or go for essential stealth kills, or you can alert them to your presence and engage in all-out warfare. Since the AI and NPC models are so well done, combat is extremely fun whatever approach you choose. Not all the levels are equally compelling. I've played Frontline over and over because it's so brilliantly designed. It's fun trying to figure out all the different ways you can complete the mission. But some of the rail shooter maps I find a bit boring. It's much better when giving you experiences full of mystery and astonishing world-building. I've never played the original, but Redux seems about as good as story-driven games can be. Highly recommended.

Metro 2033 is a post apocolyptic FPS game set in the underground metro system of Russia in the year, you guessed it 2033. You play as a young man who lives in the metro system underground with a lot of other survivors of a nuclear war, who is unaware of anything going on in the outside world or the rest of the metro system, but when you turn of age, a friend of your family will turn up to report some news that will change your characters life in ways he can't imagine when he finds out about what is happening in the rest of the metro and worse..on the surface. Metro 2033 has a great atmosphere, while you are traversing the world, the stealth can make you feel on edge, the scary scenes make you feel like you are actually there. The game can be a little difficult as you need to manage all your resources that you have on you, such as ammunion which can run short very quickly and can force you to get past enemies in other ways. The game has great graphics and sound as mentioned above, there is no bugs or glitches that I have come across. If you are into post apocolyptic survival games you will love this, just buy it lol.

Positive: The game has nice graphics and an average atmosphere. Dialogs are good and the sounds are atmospheric. Negative: Totally linear shooter with little brain involved and scripted enemy spawning. The games uses save points and has no notable weapon modifications, trading or other ingame options or decisions. It just guides you though the story. Fazit (2*): This is a linear story shooter that leads you without any deviation through a scripted world. It did not really catch me and sometimes you just keep on looking for the damned thing to trigger next.

I bought the Linux version of this series on Steam, but prefer to own my games if possible. I am running Metro 2033 and Last Light from GOG on Linux via Wine 4.3 with staging. And it runs and sounds fine. The only thing I had to install in Wine was xaudio2_7.dll. So if your running Linux you can still play this series via Wine 64bit virtual drive on Playonlinux. The new games like Anthem, Fallout 76 and other online only games are more trouble than they are worth. Support GOG guys they are an excellent source for hard to find games.
