What a scary, tense, blast to play!
I loved the game "S.T.A.L.K.E.R. : The Shadow of Chernobyl" as far as I got (I've not finished it yet and restarted several times to try different versions) so METRO 2033 looked like something in that line. As it turns out, I liked METRO much better! METRO has more of a story than S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and it's much more linear. In fact it's very linear so if you hate that in a game then this one won't be for you. One of the things that I loved about S.T.A.L.K.E.R. was that I could roam a given area or hang around a complex and bandits would come by in a short while and I could have a running gun battle with them, often with the help of friendly S.T.A.L.K.E.R.'s. Then you could loot the bodies of guns, ammo and supplies which helped you restock for free and give you stuff to sell or trade. Not so in METRO. There are safe zones in the underground, cities where you can restock your ammo if you have the money (pre-war, high quality ammo) and get some other things, but the selection is VERY limited. There is really nothing else to do. Almost no NPC's to talk to, no side quests to carry out. You resupply and then it's time to move on. I don't usually like this kind of limited game play, but to me, the story had a way of keeping you anxious and wanting to move on and I loved it. Mostly there's no open spaces. You travel down dark, dripping tunnels, while things skitter around putting you on edge...until they attack in numbers that threaten to overwhelm you. I'm NOT good at first-person shooters and I got killed a number of times in areas that were tough for me, but it never felt so hard that I wanted to give up. I'd replay that section until I survived the challenge and it felt great to pull it off. This isn't BORDERLANDS. You don't have a huge selection of weapons to choose from and you can only carry a couple at a time so you've got to live with what you have until you get to a safe zone or find something different. For $5.00 (on sale) it's a great game!
