This game has great atmosphere. It really make's you feel like post-apocalyptic survivor fighting for life. If you want to take a break from 500 choices, 100 endings type of games I can highly recommend this title.
The game's a pretty faithful adaptation of the Metro 2033 novel. When I read the book, it read very much like a novelization of an RPG, so for the most part it translates well into a game. Artyom, son of the commander of one of the stations on the outskirts of the Metro- the remains of the Moscow subway system inhabited by the survivors of the nuclear war- is tasked to reach the Metro's centre- the nation of Polis- and warn the Spartan Order about a new and deadly mutant threat. He stumbles his way from station to station falling in with smugglers and prophets, he brushes with various factions inhabiting the Metro- such as Reich fascists or Red Line communists as he stabs'n shoots his way forward,
It's mostly linear atmospheric shooter with stealth elements. The purpose of stealth is to reduce the number of enemies that you face once the shooting starts. I played on Ranger difficulty, and so gameplay was similar to STALKER- every bullet can be lethal to both you and the enemy, so careful planning is important. The AI isn't the brightest, as it's totally possible to herd a whole bunch into a narrow corridor and line up a sequence of headshots, but other than that they'll flank you, and use grenades to flush you out of cover.
Artyom also has to deal with various mutants, and these give the game its horror overtones. They are much more fantastical and deadlier than most of their STALKER counterparts and pose a serious threat for most of the game.
you're limited to 2 guns at a time, which gets some getting used to. There's a decent amount of weapon customization that encourages you to explore the levels to collect currency that can be spent both on purchasing ammo and upgrading guns on friendly stations. The game also features sections where you explore above ground, but these are usually on a time limit that's dependent on the amount of air filters. These were a highlight.
Drawback: lack of achievements. The story also ended up simplified as opposed to the book
Just finished a game on Survival Ranger Hardcore (hardest possible setting). Make no mistake, this is not your typical FPS, though on the easy settings it could be played as one.
Graphics are good even in 2018. The game runs smoothly on win 10. No major bugs or glitches.
Post-apocalyptic life in the metro tunnels is not supposed to be cheerful or easy, and this game attempts to portray that by creating a scarcity of supplies, thus forcing you to think and act as a survivor.
Lack of air filters for a gas mask, shortage of ammunition, hard-hitting enemies can be frustrating at times, and even forced me to replay few chapters a couple of times, BUT at the same time, it made the game so much more immersive and enjoyable. Its dark and can be overwhelming when you find yourself gasping for fresh air, looking for that one air filter in the wreckage of demolished Moscow, to give you a few extra minutes so you can find few more shotgun shells to blast your way through the next enemy swarm...or just sneak past them.
Feels awesome than you master the game and is not so hard as many people, here in reviews, are conveying. So please, stop downranking the game if you suck at it or its simply not your type.
P.S: that is precisely why so many games have been dumbed down during the years so fragile snowflakes could get their participation trophies in every game they touch (a bonus mini rant).
A great experience of a game ruined by 3 or 4 hard crashes one of whitch froze my PC. I also had some framerate issues when playing with vsync on and having everything maxed out. I know I don t have the best of PCs but it should still run metro with graphics maxed out, but it doesn't without frame drop. Many others have the same problems as I've discovered on steam forums etc. Other than the poor optimisations it's a great game!
This game has a remarkable story, and as I understand it, these games are based on 2 Russian books called metro 2033 and Metro 2035.
I like how you are following the main protagonist for the whole game series. The main protagonist Is the youngest and newest member. He unofficially became a Ranger when Hunter assigned him his first mission to get to Polis to find Miller.
You can see and feel it a Russian game, but it works well, and since it's happening in Russia, that makes it so much better. I like how they make you feel afraid when you in the dark or when you have to sneak around and turn off the light to keep hitten. Also, they have an excellent light effect that makes the game even more emerged.
The system is simple, and it works. It doesn't try to be somthing it's not, and it gives you a lot of options to customize your weapons the way you want them. I am a silencer kind of guy i want to be as silent as i can when i shoot and take people down without noise. i also like that you are paying with army-grade bullets since they are hard to get your hands on, so they are worth a lot. It's also cool that you need to recharge your batteries and re-pump your deadly bb-gun. Or how the light is hurting the spiders. That's a nice touch that makes them deadly but at the same time gives you a fighting chance to kill them.
My overall Conclusion is this game, even if it from 2014, is still one of the best game in 2020/21 i feel like too many Shitty games are getting out, and too many don't see the quality and don't mind playing Shitty games and still rate them high. Nevertheless, this game deserves to be ranked high, and i want to see more games like this where people put their soul into the game and want to make a game that is worth playing and people love to come back to or love to own more copies of it.
