Metro 2033 Redux

Hi, Metro 2033 Redux, is a (FPS). Set after a nuclear holocaust, with underground stations, subways, above ground wastelands. Superb graphics. High graphics available. Fight soldiers, mutated beasts left over in a radioactive wasteland. Configurable keys, like - movements, jump, crouch, toggle crouch, flashlight gizmo, lighter/journal, gas mask, night vision + more. Weapons, like - pistols, shotguns, automatic weapons, scoped weapons, grenade types (ex: Incendiary), lighter to get through (webs) + more. Upgrade weapons and buy/sell weapons at depots. Has NPC's speeches, chatter, excellent sound effects, music. Voice languages available at this time are (English, Russian, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Ukrainian). On the pro side, this game has great atmosphere, great graphics and good story-telling. The mood is quite dark and foreboding, a bit like in the Stalker games. The negatives are mostly gameplay-related. The game is highly scripted and completely on rails. Often you follow invincible NPCs on a fixed path, or are playing short segments between cutscenes. Fighting other humans feels alright, here you can make use of stealth too. Fighting the mutants is however quite awkward and frustrating. Stealth won't help against them, their hit-boxes are wonky, they will always run up to you and be right in your face. They come in large groups too. The game has some interesting set-pieces and a strong narrative. So if you are looking for a story driven experience you might like the game. Be aware that combat is tough though, and there's no manual saving allowed. Prepare to play cerain sections over and over.. plus if you're too slow in the above-ground areas, you will run out of gas mask filters and be unable to progress. As an overall experience the game feels mediocre to me, though I can see why some people might enjoy it.

I picked both of the older Metro games because Exodus looks awesome and I wanted to get caught up before playong it. (No, I don't care about what store it's on. Too bad not on GOG though.) Anyway, surround sound is completely whack on this game. That's just a side-note that can be overlooked for the most part. As for the game itself, it has many, many areas that consistently crash and it's getting to the point that I'm not sure if it's worth playing through. Even when it isn't crashing it is quite poorly optomized. I have a fairly beefy rig and I should be able to play a five-year-old game on mostly high settings. But alas, no chance. I want to like this game and will continue to play if it lets me. I will update later on the actual gameplay/story elements. For now though, I would reccomend a bit of caution with this title.

This is a story driven FPS. Freedom is pretty much the same as most FPS'es where you have limited freedom (basically running through a corridor). You have some more if you are in the underground cities. The game still looks gorgeous (time of writing 13 Sept 2017), in the cities people react very naturally when you approach or stand staring at them for a while which make it feel very realistic. So is this the FPS you want to play, well .... Unfortunately the game designers thought it needed timed levels, (yikes!). The game mechanic for that is gas masks which are in very limited supply and run out after a while. After you run out you have to reload the last checkpoint. And that is the other problem you can not just save anywhere. The gas masks and checkpoint can lead to saves where you already didn't have enough gas masks to finish the level and as a result have to start it completely from the beginning. Gas masks and bullets are hard to come by (I played on 'easy'). For me the timed levels and checkpoint system makes the game stressful instead of fun. Personally I play games to relax not to get stressed. Good: - Story driven - Amazing looking gameworld (textures, animations, how people react) - Cities in between your 'runs' where you can look around, buy stuff etc. Ugly: - Timed levels in the form of gas masks (minus one star) - Checkpoint system (minus one star)

A linear FPS with first person cutscenes and "press E to progress in the game" QTEs. Good atmosphere, functional progression. Horde attack sequences get pretty boring quickly, and sometimes running out of gas mask filters can require a replay of the entire chapter. Interesting moral compass system that's hidden from the player, but makes sense in regards to the story. Without the QTEs I might have enjoyed this game more.
