anyone who is complaining about the control scheme that is preset, YOU CAN ADJUST IT, its not gonna be a launch and play title, also, you can adjust the graphic settings, this game came out what,, 20 years ago, their is no ultrawide monitor settings, so deal with the normal monitor settings, this isn't MGSV. If you want to relive one of the best games that was created in that generation, then this is the game to play. love all aspects, minus a glitch where when i leave a codec message the goggles pop on, but that's not a big deal.
I was not exactly sure of what to expect going back to MGS on PC. I quickly realized that I could easily use a ps4 controller using DS4windows and everything was perfect to run. The only problem was I couldn't use the directional buttons, only analog. That was the only set back for me.
Besides that... Oh my God this game still rules.
Few games are so cinematic as this one. Cool voice acting, camera shots and soundtrack. It blew my mind when I was 12 (when I first played this) and still find it amazing 20+ years later. The story is so full of twists and turns in a way no game had done it before.
It's very blocky, but it's so full of charm that it doesn't matter to me.
Kojima's script is kinda cheesy sometimes because Snake is such a "cool soldier", but it hits some deep topics also.
No console made in the last 10 years run this game, which to me is such a pity. That's why when I saw it on GOG I bought it immediately. This is my favorite game and I'll play again once and a while.
It always brings me joy. It's not just nostalgia. This is the best Metal Gear to date with MGS 5 coming second. Now I can have it with me for a good long time. Maybe all my life. No game impacted my life like this one.
One of my all time favorite games I remember playing this back on the original ps1 back in the day ah the nastalgia is real brilliant. hearing the best is yet to come again brought the feels back for sure.
The character limit on here is brutal. I'll try and get all my points across. If you've never played MGS1 before, don't play this first. Do yourself that favor. This is the PC version from 2000 with some fixes, but it is still pretty bad.
The Good: FMVs work (but don't scale up with resolution). You can set your resolution and aspect ratio. You can enable MSAA & Anisotropic Filtering. The game actually saves your input bindings. You can play a large part of the game in First Person if you want. All your PC speedrunning tricks still work.
The Bad: The controls still suck royally (google mgs1_faq diagonal movements). The black bar at the bottom is still there. Music still loops improperly. All audio is still lower quality. The game still crashes.
If you're a speedrunner, this is the game for you. If you're curious about playing in First Person (and don't have the Integral Playstation version), it's worth toying with.
My personally recommended settings: 640x480 resolution and in Software mode. I know that sounds ridiculous, but let me explain. The FMVs don't scale up with higher resolutions. They show up tiny in the center of the screen in any resolution higher than 480p ( https://youtu.be/zGPOYW-VzBE ). When it comes to playing in Software, this is more subjective. The textures in Metal Gear Solid were never intended to be filtered. When you filter the textures, every surface in the game suddenly looks blurry and ugly. If you don't mind that, then it's fine. For me, it just isn't Metal Gear Solid with texture filtering.
Oh, and my Xbox One triggers work fine. They're just reversed. Bind your Weapon item button to your left trigger and Inventory button to your right trigger. Then, ingame, they will be in their correct locations. This is a holdover from the original PC port and is the same for any controller with analog triggers.
