This game is still a great FPS. Yeah, it lacks cover system, aiming and plenty of other modern mechanics, but what you get is pure, fast and difficult shooter with a great atmosphere - exactly how I remember it.
• Damage flinch (aim punch) is too overwhelming.
• AI can be unforgiving at times (especially in the later stages such as the infamous "Sniper Town" level).
• Due to the difficulty and the somewhat "trial-and-error" gameplay, save scumming becomes a viable tactic (the act of saving before each encounter). Overall bad game design if the player has to rely on this.
In conclusion, MoH:AA is still a solid experience but the same development team went on to make the first Call of Duty which corrected nearly everything wrong with Allied Assault. My recommendation? Pick it up on sale!
I put off buying this when I saw it in stores 20 years ago, and wow am I really disappointed in myself for not scrounging up the money for it. It's definitely one of the best WW2 FPS games and most likely the best Medal of Honor PC game.
Let me get my gripes with this game out of the way first.
1. When you get hit your camera jumps up and you'll find yourself stunlocked against machine gunners or multiple enemies. It's impossible to counteract it and it's the worst aspect of the game.
2. Maybe a little spoilery but the expansion/DLC "Breakthrough" severly reduces health and ammo pickups. It's a nice challenge, but as a more action packed game I find it annoying that I had to worry if I was going to have enough ammo to finish the missions.
3. I didn't care for the tank missions at all and most of the vehicle missions.
4. Powell can't jump real well.
5. Ladders
6. Couldn't run at the highest resolution in base game. Had to use the second highest otherwise the game would not load.
Here are the good things.
1. On some missions you get to go undercover and infiltrate or you can go in guns blazing. It's a nice mixture of pace and puts it ahead of Call of Duty easily. In fact there are some awesome missions. The U-Boat mission is fun even if it was done twice before in MoH and Frontline. It's great every single time.
2. You don't aim down sights (ADS) in this game. This lends itself to an older gameplay style which allows you to move around instead of having to stop to aim which the series moved to.
3. Quick save, quick load, and objective saves. No more redoing the whole level like the previous MoH games. I wish the other MoH games had quick saving.
4. In the "Spearhead" expansion they got Gary Oldman to voice Sgt. Barnes and there are more great missions.
5. Music is great
Really enjoying a game that I only played the demo of back when it was new. While the graphics aren't state of the art, they are actually pretty nice. The audio quality and sounds effects are good. This is hardly a new game, but it is challenging and frustrating enough to drive you nuts at times and make you happy at other times. Funny how the bad guys are such excellent shots! I recommend it.
Bought this game after probably 10 years of last try and Im gonna say its great for nostalgia gaming, completed main campaign in about 20 hours on easy, the game was memory line of places i knew but this time I didnt suck!
I see lot of "average" reviews being around gameplay and mechanics that dont realize its old game basically trying to find itself and I think its perfect, yes enemies are hiding behind bushes, trees and/or fog, yes they can take couple of more hits but so can you. I personally didnt ran out of ammo at all nor died that much (about 15 times in total) but I couldnt enjoy higher difficulties.
The gog version of game is quite bugless unless you try hard to find them, game crashed once during whole playthrough
