Ignore the review that says that this game is published by New Blood. It is not. The publisher is clearly labeled as Balloon Moose Games. A few months ago, the developer of this game switched publishers because he felt they were trying to make it a game where you just spend 15 minutes or so at a time messing around, but he always wanted the game to be like an action movie, with cutscenes, a plot, and clear objectives. I own this game on Steam, but I won't be playing it until it leaves early access. It looks like a lot of fun, but I don't buy or play early access games (it was a gift). I strongly recommend checking out this game at some point in the future, but so far, it is indeed bare-bones, with no cutscenes or plot. You can just run around and shoot people for a few minutes until you get bored of it.
Yes, I know this game is still in development.
In the GOG forums there wasone question: does it have support for modification? Well, I can tell you, that in this state the game - at least for now - in the offline vesion doesn't have any mod support. At all. I don't use GOG Galaxy so can't say/speak for the Galaxy version, what that one has or doesn't.
I made a video, where I checked the menus, tutorial, character creation, a bit of gameplay etc. Look:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DU0t-7bkJWg
In the time of writing, this is the offline version 0.78, file name is setup_maximum_action_0.78_(47124).exe
The main menu is interesting, it is like a living room with an old CRT TV, and VHS videocasettes, which you can choose. The loadings screens
Anyway, the core gameplay is there, I mean it is/can be fun, especially when you blow up stuff, things are flying around and so on. The physics system is there.
The weapons sounds are very good, very puncy! The music is ok for me (some say, that these are just generic tracks, the original soundtrack author left the project or whatever happened).
I don't have problems with the graphics, but won't deny, that it couldn't be a bit more detailed. BTW: Dusk has similar look, buy maybe with a bit more polygons? Not sure.
The environments looks very good, at least from distance. I really like the coloring, the lights/shadows. Reminds me of these late 1990s/early 2000s 3D games (Rune, Shadow Man, Soul Reaver etc.)
The gameplay is, well, you know, standard FPS action, fast-paced, but you have the option for slow-motion ala Matrix/Max Payne style. You can also kick, even in middle air. The kick mechanic is nothing special, I tried it out, it does works, but maybe I don't have fast enough reflexes for it. Not sure.
The levels (I tried to play the first three) last only a couple of minutes, but you can play it slowly too ;)
There is an endless mode is, didn't try it.
CONCLUSION: You can give it a chance, but I would say wait a bit.
Game is great, bar none! exciting and exhilarating gameplay, banger mix of stages, guns, gameplay and absolute killer music. Basic character customisation with sandbox training, story and endless mode. Everything is great, almost perfect even for a action shooter game.....however, it is diminished entirely by one problem, although it is but one aspect, it annoys my monkey shooter brain. That is, the controls. although it offer more mechanisms than your average indie shooter, allowing for more creative approach to everything, the controls are annoying.
Although games of any kind can change the their controls however they want and develop whatever they choose, there are still those silent game common sense that are by majority today. The most obvious, WASD for movement or space for jumping as an example.
The problems that will be listed for me can be fix by adding running as a game mechanic. You might be dismay that I say so considering that you are already fast but I would rather have less speed as normal walking and then speed up to the current max speed by sprinting. I say this because of what I am about to say next.
Two major problems, the dive and crouch. Your jumping and Max Payne diving are two different controls. Although this allows for more usage, it can be frsutrating to try to rewrite your brain that Lctrl isn't crouching and that by clicking (WASD)+space/Lctrl+Lctrl/space isn't diving. Simply click Lctrl once and you will instantly dive. Diving itself can be an issue since after the initial jump, it takes a bit before you can move again, oddly though, you can spam the dive over and over again jumping like penguins. Crouching is next, you don't crouch. You slide. That's it.
A retro-FPS, with awesome 80's music and action packed levels with armed goons everywhere. Now I like the game and want it to succeed, but I can't recommand it to everyone at the moment.
The game has cool features like a scene creator, endless mode, shooting range and replay scene (after a level is completed jou can see your run from different angles, but needs some work). I understand the game is like make your own fun type of game, but it obviously needs more substance, after completing the main levels and getting the secret cheats there's just not much to do than endless mode and scene creator.
All in all, not a bad in-development game, just needs some oven time.
need more maps, more things that can make it better and fix the performance but, is an amazing game and really is something different from other games, take a look and try it, this game is amazing and the Dev is nice ^^
