An Amazing Game

This game looks beautiful, sounds fantastic and it's really fun to play. I'm a big fun of both MOO and MOO2 and played them for countless hours back then and I think this is the true successor that we have been waiting for. The races are really well recreated and playing with a different race makes for a completely different game because of their strengths and weaknesses. There are a few races not included from MOO2: The Elarians, the Gnolams and the Trilarians, but there is a new extra race in this collector's edition, although there are just like a different type of humans. To be honest, the races are so well developed in this game that I think it surpasses MOO2 by far. There is also a lot of customization to be made regarding the game conditions and the victory conditions. There are only a few places where I can see room for improvement on my opinion. One is that I would prefer turn base combat instead of real time combat. The other one is to have a winning video for turn 500, there are winning videos but for some reason there are none if you win the game on turn 500. To me it's still a 5 star game and I'm having lot's of fun playing it. Thank you for making this great game.

Avoid This Unfinished Game

The developers have abandoned this game. It has crashes, bugs, broken mechanics and unbalanced races left over. It is like buying a pre-release game, that will never get finished.

A decent reboot of the series

I'm a diehard master of orion fan. That being said, the current reboot is surely a work of love, but also fails in some departments. First and foremost, the graphics. I really love them. The Silicoid, the Meklar, the Mrrshan - they look exactly as they should. 10/10. However, there is also the department of game design. And here, several flaws enter that I have already observed in civ 5 and civ 6 & which I consider major steps back: (1) Racial traits. The races simply don't play as differently as the original races did. (2) Tactical combat. There is nothing wrong with the switch to real time combat. However, the game designers necessarily would also have to switch technologies & weapons to account for that. In original turn based combat I could look up the impact of every single missile, plan carefully when to fire at what shield arc etc. Now, we have real time & I simply cannot judge whether missiles, beam weapons, torpedoes etc. do the better job. Here the designers would have had to be more audacious & redesign the whole tech tree. (3) Exploration. Since there is no fuel range, you can explore the whole galaxy from the beginning. Which takes away a lot of that "whats lurking around the next corner?" feeling, because you quickly know everything there is. (4) Colonization. It's sad that the original moo1 techs to colonize subsequently more and more hazardous planets & terraform it was replaced by the rather boring "catch all" colony base & terraforming. There is a lot of "builder" feeling going to waste. (5) Espionage. You get a limited amount of spies similar to civ 5/6. Seriously? Even moo2 was more indepth than that. It's a boardgame inspired mechanic & doesn't reflect grand strategy. (5) Star lanes. It's ok I guess, but results in a "board game" feeling & takes away the "grand empire" feeling. Altogether, I think moo cts is a good groundwork from the technical side. A sequel that redesigns the actual gameplay, racial traits, weaponry, tactical combat might be much more than just nice graphics.

All too easy

This game looks nice, sounds nice and plays almost OK. The tactical space combat however is a joke. Looking nice as well but with absolutely no tactical depth to it. On a strategic scale, it becomes even worse. Why even bother with the buggy diplomacy system when you can simply rush your helpless enemies into the ground? This is possible almost at any point in the game, so if you're not into holding yourself back for the sake of roleplaying, the enemy AI offers no challenge whatsoever. You just build a squadron big enough to bomb any colony of your enemies except their homeworld into the ground. If they counterattack at all, it will be a whimsical attempt at best. After a dozen rounds or so, their economy is reduced to nothing, sitting on their lame homeworlds all alone, polluting the shit out of it in an attempt to pump out at least a handful of cruisers, which will be no contest in the slightest to your evergrowing army, fueled by your powerful economy. In the end, I always tried to be the good guy and offered all of those fools peace while my titanic fleet roamed their home system protected by beforementioned handful of cruisers and even then the stupid AI made colossal demands for accepting a truce. What a horrible, stupid AI. What a non-challenge this game is. Even the AI is completely and I mean COMPLETELY unfinished or what's more likely the case, they simply dumbed it down for the foolish players of today who can't even handle a single defeat without throwing a shit fit all around. So WARNING: This game is NOT for the fans of the original game it tries so desperately to emulate. I know that by this point, the game is still in development, but if the dev team doesn't throw around the rudder by at least 179 degrees, this game will soon be forgotten or spoken of in shame by the fans of the original first two games who are still true classics. I really hope they can still pull this off. Come on! Get to work an JUST DO IT!!!
