Horrible EULA!

The game EULA is terrible. It states that the game may serve ads to and collect information from the player. Also, for this game, GOG Galaxy is _required_ for multiplayer; it also requires linking one's GOG.com account to a wargaming.net account. As for the game itself, it's simple and enjoyable, although perfectly forgettable. MOO1 and MOO2 are far better. In short: nothing new under the sun. If you want something simple and streamlined, but still a great game, try Sword of the Stars.

Don't ignore the low reviews

It's hard to describe what is missing because the graphics are adequate , the gameplay is adequate, and the challenge is adequate. All in all, this is a modern rendition of the Master of Orion series, and that should be great, but it just feels so hollow. I think the issue with MOO is that is feels like a cash grab. There is nothing really unique in this game. The gameplay, while updated, feels like a rinse and repeat of other space 4X games. The graphics are very space generic. A good example is how the ships are just bland, and the customization for each ship is really lame. The DLC is nothing more than races taken out of the complete game as sold to us as something "new". Finally, as soon as the publishers realized that MOO was not going to be Civilization levels of successful, they dropped support faster than you can blink an eye. The game is so hollow that to get any type of enjoyment you really need to download the 5X mod. Honestly, read the other reviews here, and then go buy a better 4X game.

Modern games

I don't hate it so far, though not nearly as epic MoO 2. As all games have, they've 'dumbed it down' in order to cater to the masses. I have loved MoO for as long as I can remember but so far, it has yet to amaze me. It just doesn't have the same soul it used to have and as for killing the Guardian of Orion, surprisingly un-epic. The diplomacy system needs a lot of work also. You colonise 3 plants and suddenly the entire galaxy hates you? Even your allies? Despite the fact you have many reasons for them to like you, eg. treaties, exchanging tech and accepting requests, they now hate you because of a bit of colonising no where near their home sector or territory. Also the awful jokes get a little repetitive. I'm a bird, lets make bird jokes,.. I'm a cat, lets make cat jokes...

It's still MOO

I’m a big MOO2 fan, I still play it to this day. I was sceptical about this remake/sequel after reading the tons of negative reviews but after finally playing it, I was not disappointed at all. People loved MOO for various reasons. From a deep/complex strategic 4x experience, some might find this lacking in comparison to some of the other titles in the genre available out there. But in terms of atmosphere, this is still MOO! From the game flow to music to the artwork to the racial interactions and general feel, everything feels very loyal to the original. The first thing I did, was to scan the game for the familiar pieces, and everything was there: Custom race designs, leaders, spies, stellar converters, space amoebas, deep core waste dumps… they were all there, along with some really helpful (and fun) additions and some interesting tweaks to original concepts. The only thing I miss, is the way MOO2 gave you a “on the surface of the planet” view when managing colonies, which provided some needed variation from the galaxy view. My advice: if you are a MOO fan, get this one when it’s on special. If you are a die-hard fan of the genre, have a look around at some of the bigger titles that have come out recently.

At least it has a good cast ;-)

Expand it off of MOO2 otherwise it is just another civilization game. Not a big fan of controlled warp points and no tactical control over the ships. I remember sending entire fleets just to launch their payloads at a planet before they where destroyed, thus damaging or even wiping out an opponents infrastructure. Bring that back to me ;-)
